Ground & Pound Soundman saga

#98 in the books , I managed to squeeze in a few extra artists and overall the night was a good one .

One of the 75 yr old vetran performers plugged in with his buddy on bass, he's a great acoustic luthier , however he was getting ZERO output from his K&K pickup, I switched cables , put him through my clean boost with an extra 30db of gain .. still NADA .. he was convinced it couldn't possibly be his guitar , So I just mic'd him .. and he said "Oh I like tha better anyway "

Now I'd sound checked everything , and he was there and knew it wasn't the amp , other performers had played through as well .

At the end of the evening after I'd broken everything down , I plugged straight in with my Tripple Soapy .. and of course it worked like a charm no problem ..

I called my friend over .. "Hey buddy .. you see it's NOT the amp or cable" ... he still INSISTED it wasn't His guitar .... LOL

The boss and I had a good laugh about it.

Fun night , Beau upgraded to a gold top DGT SE .. first one I've heard live .. it fit very well .
We agreed it was the perfect gig guitar Not quite as much magic as the Core but roadworthy without the ding paranoia
I need a “ding paranoia free” guitar for downstairs. “Need” as in I have 3 electric and one acoustic, and I can only play one at a time. Yes, I realize this is the PRS enablers forum and the previous sentence is blasphemy.

Anyway, I’m glad it was a great night. I truly love and look forward to your reports and comments on the cafe’s musical doings, and whatever else may arise from your adventures. Thanks for bringing us along!

I use my KL 33 with a coil tap and IRW neck SC as my main gigging guitars , both a bit road worn when I got them and they were both great deals .
I only pull out my PS, Artist and Custom shop models for special occsions now .

While I thought the SE served well , and is a much more practical choice . it wasn't quite there for me , I'm glad they are available and I'd recommended them .

Good show last night . my friend did a great job. Talked with the boss about the 70th bday gig and it's on. We are starting to plan it.

The 2nd anniversary is next month .. wow .. designed and ordered a new T .. put a pick in the Hamsa .. it is the symbol of protection, good luck, and strength

With spring coming and the start of our 3rd year I asked the Boss if we could have patio pre-shows , just a mic and amp , we have a big couch out front , and tables. Good way to pull people in and give 4 or 5 more slots before the main show. She loved it and will be adding string lights to help .

I'm hoping if it goes well we can have tip jar pre shows on the the weekend for some of the new artists... I've been lobbying for a while .. slowly but surely ...

We had a great 100th show , the theme was love songs and we had a packed house and an over full roster. I managed to squeeze in a dozen artists a poet and a standup comic. The majority of the artists have CD's out , so it was really quite special.

During the sound check I was having fun playing, this middle aged chap that's played a few times on a clunker squire Tele tells me .. " Man if I could get that sound , I know you would book me, is that possible? "

I turned to him and said , " you can have that tone with time and talent sir." His journey is not complete...

We finished up our 2nd year last night and it was overall a delightful show . One deranged ranter that was supposed to be a stand up .. he insulted the audience and is BANNED from the venue. He was trying to pick a fight with everyone.. sorry wrong place...

I've moved any spoken word to the end of show and limit it to 5 minutes .

We'll be starting the patio pre shows for all Music nights as soon as we get the new setup in place , a nice canopy and couch combo .
Open Mic pre shows will start on the 19th to celebrate the arrival of Spring .

Nicely done, and what was he thinking?!!???

Well the time has finally come to lay down the tracks for my first CD . I've got 60+ originals I recorded back on my old 424 Portastudio ages ago
( cassette based 8 channel) and have been working on new ones in the last few years

. A few years back I snagged a 2488 Neo Portastudio
2488neo.jpg

I'd done 1 for a friends daughters College project but never made the time to do my own . While it can upload for more digital wizardry I'm going to keep it low key. Man it's SO nice to be able to fast back instantly to the beginning and the onboard eq/tuner / efx are handy

All the experience running sound really helps . I've got a drum track , 2 conga tracks and a bass line laid down for a new song today .. big fun.

I've always enjoyed the challenge of covering all the bases instrument / production wise albiet a tedious task. This time I'm hoping to get Family and Friends to join in the fun and have a very organic and memorable recording to leave behind for them.

I hope you are going to share with us, your output! Have a great time!!

I got the first one "completed" it was mostly just a get used to the new toy excersize but sounds ok .
I laid down an acoustic rythm track on my PS Angelus and it really came through well , added slide on my Mc Soapy .

Kind of a Little Feat meets Pink Floyd on the Bayou ..

I'll re-record it now that know my way around most of the features. It has been BIG fun composing and recording a new song in one day.

Don't you just love those mornings where you wake up and know what you've got to fix... I listened through the recording and decided to replace the slide track with my trusty old Taylor 856ce 12 string in open G ... ahh that was just the ticket .. lays in the mix much better and sounds deliciously swampy.

When I sit down to compose on guitar or keys it's usually a long tedious process . I decided to use a different approach this time after all the shows in the last 2 years. So a forced composition mode cuts the procrastination ... Sort of like a Jam session

I'll run through the basic track on drums until I get the groove, and then add congas, bass and guitars. I usually have a keeper in a few passes.
The challenge for me is to " try to sound like different people" .
When I first starting recording solo 26 years ago , I'd tended to clone my parts too much .

Song #2 ,3 and 4 went WAY quicker, got drums , conga and bass laid down in short order . 3 in a day is enough .. I even squeezed in setting up tonights band on a break .

looking forward to the collaborations coming on the project
