Got to play with a $16,145 PRS, and...

I find it amusing that people think PS 's are overpriced .. At the Artisan Guitar show (top luthiers , held in Harrisburg in April worth the visit) the last 2 visits the cheapest guitar was $+6500 and the majority were well over 15 . John Monteleone has several over $150 K ..

The minimum time I spend on a build is 100 hours .. add in exotic material costs and you can imagine why the prices are high

Alembics least expensive guitar is $12,975 +$750 for a case AAA maple tops are +2800 Top model starts at $43,000 !
Benedetto same deal .. $12,500-40K

May I copy this and post on my same topic thread on another forum?

Why worry about what other people think?

There’s a market for expensive guitars. That’s why they’re made. There’s a market for inexpensive guitars.

I’m a used Core guy. Can’t really afford new Cores and S2s/imports don’t interest me. I think it’s pretty awesome that people can position themselves in life to buy really nice things—it’s how life rewards a person for hard work/luck/discipline/whatever. It’s also pretty awesome that there are fine guitars available at most every price point along the way.

Some people are envious of the means of others. For some of those, that envy comes out in pathetic ways.

Chocolate Monkey Enema

Not as cleansing as one would think...

Anyway, I belong to that guitar board where @littlebadboy posted his experience, and yeah, for the most part peeps were a bit put-off by this $16K instrument.

Me? Well, this particular PS example is nowhere near my vibe, however, it is someone else's vibe. Respect.

Regards,

J

Let’s hope these guys don’t learn guitar.
While I agree with your post, my perspective has changed over the years. When I first came to the forum and said how much I didn't like "guitar collectors" who didn't even play guitar, I was sternly reprimanded. My perspective was, guitars collected as "art" were a waste of an instrument that deserved to be played and used to make music. I was told that A) anyone who has the means, can buy and collect any kind of art that they want too. So that rare impossible to find model that I think might be my grail that some guy in Japan has 3 of... that's my problem, not his. And B) it was noted that during some lean years, it may have been those high end "collectors" that allowed PRS to survive as a company. And if true, that alone trumps everything else.

Yes very much agree there. How someone enjoys a guitar is very much their prerogative. If someone derives more fulfilment leaving a guitar unplayed than actually playing it, then that’s the be all end all right there. It’s not a waste if they enjoy it more that way. Their dopamine is not our dopamine. Unless they used our money to buy their guitar, our opinion is irrelevant.

And even if it were a waste, hey it’s their money earned fairly and squarely. Paul will make enough guitars for everyone. No shortage there.

If someone were to ask me to picture a 16k USD PRS, this isn't what I'd imagine...

Yes, I agree. I used to feel the same about other unused treasures. Elite sports cars that set in collectors “museums “ with 50 miles on a 20 or 40 year old car… total waste… to me. But I have completely changed my thinking on this subject over the years. Or at least, that’s what I put on my application for adoption by a rich guitar or car collector!
