We have an interesting gig tonight. We will be at a bowling alley of all places. I haven't seen the set up yet but I'm told stage has been built on lanes with bowling balls being shot down the lanes we are on. Balls will travel under stage. Guess I finally made the big time!

Anyway, it will be well below zero degrees tonight. If anybody is out tonight please be careful.

After reading my thread I just want to say I'm embarrassed.

a gig is a gig. enjoy it. and dont spend any time thinking about all the cracks people will make about the balls beneath your legs...

for what it's worth, i once had a week-long gig in a strip club.

Bowling Balls are pretty big. Perhaps "Big Balls" would be appropriate.
Ahhh ... have many fond memories of strip club gigs back in the day.

When would that not be appropriate?
I remember a female singer quitting our band years ago because we refused to skip that song at a gig...among other reasons...

Ok, they didn't do the stage like they said. They just shut off 4 lanes and we set up on those. So I guess it was ok.

Back in the day, we did a week long gig at a joint. Half was a bar the other half was a strip club. The band and the females had rooms to stay in upstairs all week. That was different. It was in iowa too.

That's wild! I played a bowling alley for quite a few months back in the early '70's, but at least we were in the bar! I can't imagine actually trying to play in the lanes. The room echo would be at least as bad as a school gym!

The gig was just ok. They had us clear back by the pins and when people would get close to us management would usher them off the lanes. I think it made quite a few people mad. Made it impossible to connect too.

I was expecting a lot of reflections but it wasn't bad at all. I dialed the drums in myself and the kit sounded pretty good. My guitar sounded different in there though, took a bit of tweaking.

Overall I think we should of passed on this gig.. sometimes gigs can hurt your band more than help.

Sorry to here things did not turn out that well. I have also played a few times where because of logistical issues it was impossible to connect with the "audience" or we were not able top set up properly. Needless to say I came to the same conclusion as you did - if a gig doesn't seem right for whatever reason, I (or my band) will pass - "brand name" and reputation are just too important to compromise.

The problem with bowling alley gigs is that all your mistakes really stand out. You know (wait for it), because you can hear every little flaw in there because (wait for it)...

It's so quiet you can hear a pin drop.
