So Saturday my band played our first show in quite some time with our new drummer. We're a little over halfway through recording our third disc right now (which is sounding amazing) and have been wanting to get back out for a while. So we played this decent sized place Saturday night. Went on an hour late (when does any band ever actually get to play on time), got our stuff set on stage in under ten minutes and the sound guy went on to mic the drums, bass rig, my amp and set levels. 10 minutes later we went on.
First two songs went well. Halfway through the third song a different guy comes up and actually turns down my bass player's amp and my amp , moves my mic stand and the monitor in front of me, and steps on the EHX POG pedal on my board. This guy it turns out is the head sound guy and the one who set us up was new to the venue. After this apparently no one could hear my vocals anymore and the sound wasn't as balanced. Turns out the vocals were now only coming through my monitor so I had no idea no one else could hear them.
After the show a lot of people came up to us and told us about the dropout of vocals after that sound guy came on to the stage and said how rude it was of him to try and talk to us WHILE we were playing. Very unprofessional. We did get a lot of compliments of how great the songs sounded and couldn't believe how full we sounded for a 3-piece, so that was different. Needless to say, not sure I would want to play this venue again. At least not with that sound guy in the vicinity. I'm not alone in thinking that it was very unprofessional to move a singers mic while they are singing, step on one of their pedals, touching the amp, and moving the monitor right?

He did this while you were in the middle of a song? Oh my....

What a bummer. Not much you can do either. You're at his mercy no matter what. Bring your own sound guy next time.

I was gonna make a crack about "bad soundman" being redundant, but that crosses a line!

I'd try to make contact with the guy and discuss what happened. A sound man can help out a band, too, if there's good communication about what you're trying to accomplish.

Ouch, recipe for disaster there. Don't interrupt the band, at least he should have let you finish the song and then made adjustments.

If he stepped on your pedalboard, he isn't a pro. PERIOD. I've worked with tons of people over the years and I can count the the PRO sound people on ONE HAND. Most have a control issue, don't care, or lack the actual experience/knowledge needed to run a professional stage/FOH mix.

Just watched video of the show that the bass player had. Yea, you totally see how things start heading south soundwise when he steps up there. I still can't believe he tried talking to us while we were playing and stepped on my board. I couldn't figure out what the heck happened during that song until it was almost done. All of a sudden low notes sounded like a detuned bass and the high notes sounded like an organ :p Those last songs I had to scream practically too :/

Sound men make adjustments during songs all the time.

HOWEVER, stepping on people's equipment and moving mics and monitors during a song when the singer has not indicated they were having a problem is just not cool.

I think you should talk with the sound guy too, but to get some answers. While you have his attention, play the bass player's video for him.

I wasn't thinking any further ahead than my gut emotional reaction. I'm a musician, dammit!

EDIT: yeah, and what Andy said!

Oh, I get that, I'd have felt angry, too!

I just don't want to see any of my friends get in trouble over some random sound guy. ;)

C'mon Les, no one likes a lawyer!

Well, there's my mom...

A good sound man is a dying breed and so are luthiers ......

Jeeze, I can't swing a stick without hitting some guy who is a "luthier". Makes me yearn for the old days when the guy that fixed guitars was just a guitar tech or a guy who fixed guitars. :)
