I recently picked up a 2007 Mira and the case seems to have some unusual odor in it (not dog, cat, or kid). The immediate answer is not to put the guitar away, I know, but at some point it will have to be done.

I've tried leaving it open for a couple of days but as soon as it's closed the odor returns. I currently have some sheets of fabric softener in there but I'm not convinced it will work.

Has anyone sprayed Febreze in their case? That's my next step but I'm concerned that it may affect the guitar finish.

Any tried and true solutions appreciated.

Common solution is to open the case and allow it to air out in the sunshine. Downside is you gotta remember to bring the case indoors when it rains or after dark, so overnight dew doesn't set up inside. 2 or 3 days should solve the problem.

Alternate involves a small dish of baking soda, letting the case lay flat, and closing case for a day or 2, but I've never tried this myself and don't know what results might occur. Don't knock over the case, otherwise you'll be kicking yourself.

Stop by your local health food store, get some organic air freshener in your favorite flavor. Put in the case, and leave under your bed for 6 months. You’ll forget about it.

If the case smells like a tuna sandwich, you've got a problem. Intuition tells me, dish of baking soda, closed inside the case, undisturbed for a few days. This is not a case of bad breath where a toothbrush would help. A few days with a dish of baking soda.

It really depends on what the odor is, but the sunshine option is the most likely to help, the UV will kill off any bacteria that may be living in there causing odors.

Of course, it may also bleach out any coloring in the case to a certain extent.

You could always try Neutradol or Shake ‘n’ Vac on a little breathable bag.

Might smell of an animal testing lab (neutradol) for some time, but it will probably be better than the funk you have at the moment.

In all seriousness, a small spray can of Ozium would do the trick. You can pick it up at a cigar store. Probably a cigarette place, too.

i was told leaving smelly stuff in the sun is called ‘french baking’, but she may have been putting me on.

I'd just set the case aside with the cover left open in the sunshine for several days. You'll sleep easier at night and not worry about any possible chemical problems otherwise. You'll thank me later, and since Les is an authority on the subject, you'd thank him as well.

my case doesn’t smell; my cat wouldn’t nap in it if it did. also she said french baking was for horse tack, then referred to me and all of you as ‘protest singers’.
