FYI the madness in a number of Roman emperors came from wine flavored by simmering grape juice in lead pots.

Not that anyone here wants to be a mad emperor ....

Not just emperors. They found lead poisoning in a high percentage of skeletons found in Herculaneum. Evidently the Romans used lead casks or maybe an additive as a sweetener for their wine.

The same, incidentally is thought to have caused Beethoven’s deafness and stomach ailments; this was discovered by analysis of his hair.

Also, lead was part of womens’ makeup from Roman times until the 19th Century.
