Gen III Trem and 'dive bombing'

Hi All

I'm considering purchasing my first PRS (2021 Studio).

One of my main requirements for this guitar is the ability to do 'dive bombs' with the tremolo. I don't plan on abusing the trem (i.e. Steve Vai really yanking the 'arm') - but I do want to be able to change the pitch dramatically (both flat and sharp).

Can the Gen III Tremolo be used this way ? I don't want a guitar with a Floyd Rose and its my understanding that its possible to 'dive bomb' the way described without a Floyd Rose.

For what its worth - I'm also considering the Charvel Guthrie Govan signature guitar as its been advertised and demonstrated (on youtube) to be able to handle some pretty aggressive trem use.

Thanks
Dave

I've had no trouble doing almost anything I wanted with the PRS trem. A bit of lube in the nut slots is a big help. If I want to do whammy acrobatics, I've got an old axe with a Kahler.

It’s a stable, versatile trem system. I don’t have tuning issues with mine (gen 2). It doesn’t really do the full slack thing quite like a Floyd, but if you’re not going that extreme, there’s plenty of range. Pulling up, you’ll get a step, maybe 1 1/2, unless the guitar is up-routed, like a Tremonti.

I have one of each generation of trem, and SE trems as well. They all stay in tune when everything is set up properly. I go up, down, flutter, and will use it for vibrato on a long slow blend. Everything I touch has locking tuners.
Truth! I routinely beat up on the trem and it performs well…as long as I maintain the nut and the knife edges. There are no dive bombs here, but it stays in tune, no prob…

Although we're on a PRS forum the Charvel Guthrie Govan will, by design, stay in tune better than a tremolo PRS guitar: straight string pull at the nut, locking tremolo saddles.

Now, provided properly smoothed nut slots (meaning not what you get from the factory) and lubed the PRS will do really really well too.
