I almost feel sick... I dropped close to £3k on my PRS Cu 24 Experience 2013 model (orange fade) recently... but I've seen ads for 2nd hand PRS which are just as good going for £1800-2000......!! In any case, I'm selling some old guitars in order to fund a decent second guitar but don't know if I want a second PRS or something to complement the PRS. Here are the options:

PRS Cu24 25th Anniversary Charcoal - just under £2k
PRS CE24 Vintage Yellow - just under £1k
Fender Deluxe American Strat - ~£1200
Suhr Pro S4 - £1850

I'm kicking myself for not seeing this Cu24 above before I bought mine for so much money. The Suhr.. I LOVE it - played it in the shop and my PRS only just beat it. I love the single coils, it's punchy, it plays like a dream.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

IMO the only way to look at guitar trading is by the Big Picture: so you overpaid on the 2013....but maybe you got killer deals on your others? At the end of the day do the math on the whole collection. Example: awhile ago I traded 3 old guitars at a shop and got a brand new Collings in direct exchange, no cash. On one of my 3 trades I took a bath, but unexpectedly on one of the others they offered me close to double what I paid, so at the end I came out ahead. It's about enjoying/using what you have, not regretting what you paid to get it. Plus, you'll theoretically learn from the experience and not overpay next time! GAS is ok as long as you keep it in check and don't let it lead you into impatient decisions.

Just my .02

If you bought the 2013 new you have a lifetime warranty that at some point you may be very glad you have.

I'm from Scotland so I don't have to hand in the warranty card (so said my local PRS rep) - all I have to do is keep the receipt. What sort of things would warranty cover?

Good point - I've learned a lesson for next time! And I definitely plan NOT to sell the PRS I just got!
There's one niggle with it, though - if I bend a fair bit or lightly use the whammy, the tuning goes out by a few notches on a snark tuner.... enough for me to notice! At that price, and given it has locking tuners, I was surprised (and not in a good way) - any ideas?

I don't think you overpaid for the first PRS. You simply paid retail. It's the same with anything. You buy a new car, you pay a premium. If you buy the used car you get the price break.

I recently picked up a used Cu24 AP that, except for color, is just like the one I already have that I paid retail for (my first PRS). I got it at less than half the price of my first one. I don't see it as I paid twice what I should have for the Emerald Green one, I see it as I got a smokin' deal on the Amber burst! They both are worth more than I paid for them in tone quality and playability.

As for the second guitar? Find the one that has a sound and playability you want to keep. That is the one to buy no matter the name on the headstock. For my money that usually is a PRS.

If your trem doesn't stay in tune I'd first look at the nut. Try nut sauce or as a test just scrape some pencil lead in the slots and tune up again. You might also just push up slightly on the trem to get it back in tune.

Might try some nut sauce for sure. Disappointing, though. Some folks are saying I should take it to a tech for a set-up (it was set up very low and I had to tweak it a tad because there was some string buzz). Apart from that, it's all-round amazing!!!

The thing I really love is the satin (non-sticky) maple, pattern thin neck.

CE's are great guitars. I have a MIM strat too. Pick the one that works for you.

Problem is I've never tried a CE24... and I'm worried having two PRS' means I wont play one so much. It's a really good deal, though.

You have the same risk with the Strat. You could buy it and it will set under the bed because you play the Custom more. Especially it you don't like the playability.

The Custom and the CE will not be exactly alike. The CE will sound like it but also have more chime like a Strat, especially if it has the 5 way rotary switch. The inbetween positions (7 and 9) will be close to a Tele (7) and a Strat (9). The other 3 will be more like a LP or a PRS. The Strat will be more quacky, but it really comes down to the neck feel and playability. IMO a Strat makes you work for it more, especially when bending. But there's a blues quality to a Strat that I like and use when I really want to cop a SRV or KWS vibe. But I play better and sound better on the PRS and just have to use the inbetween settings to get close to a chimey Strat.

Play them both and then decide.

Unfortunately there's no CE24 for me to try so it'd be a leap of faith. I love the pattern thin neck on my CU24 and the compound-radius neck on the Fender Deluxe I played was lovely. I've heard the Fender trem isn't so hot regarding tuning stability, though.

Man those CEs are really great guitars it would be hard for me to pass on that.

I know, it's such a good deal.. but never played one! I love the stain pattern thin neck on my CU24... and it's very similar on the Fender I tried - and the Fender is a tone hound and would complement my Cu24. CE24 might just be more of the same as my Cu24? Wish I could have all of them!!
