Forum admin: Take my money — please!

Doesn’t matter if you pay or not. Dumpy little operations like the ones you mentioned can change their policies, get sold to creeps, or die in a heartbeat. Happens every day.

Sure. You can say the same thing about any business... Even PRS Guitars.

But in your OP you said "Image hosting sites are all scams with terrible privacy policies and nonexistent property protections." That is simply not true. The 2 sites that I mentioned are not scams, have very good privacy polices, and have protections in place to prevent theft.

I should have said, “Image hosting sites in my experience are scams…”

I have a very troubled history with photo hosting sites. I was editor-in-chief of the first digital photography print magazine, Digital Camera Magazine, in 1997. We were aggressively courted for our online content rights by two bubble-funded startups, PhotoPoint and Zing. It got pretty ugly. I chose to go with PhotoPoint, took a large sum of money, then watched both operations fail dramatically. Every funky little startup that came in their wake (that I was aware of) failed, screwing their users. All this left a rather bitter taste in my mouth, as you might imagine.

It’s an easy business to get into and an easy one to crash and burn dramatically in, trashing your customer’s entire photo libraries while selling out their personal information to creeps.

It ain’t paranoia if they’re truly out to get you.

It's easy to spend someone else's time, money, and resources.
Exactly, so what's the hold up?

I'm on several music boards, only one of which allows direct uploads. And I believe that space is fairly restricted.
Ah, ha ha ha, you said board!

If you don't want to use a file sharing site - and I don't - then host your own pictures. It's not that hard, you don't have to even generate a web page for it. Domain name plus hosting and you're done.
Don't forget your SSL Cert! That is what made some members here not be able to see my self hosted photos initially due to mixed content (http photos on https site) issue. My site was not https, and not all hosting services provide this by default (including GoDaddy who I believe is the largest hosting service in the world). So I jumped through the hoops to get the SSL Cert that I don't need except for on this forum to share my pix. Also, let's keep in mind, that some people have no idea what you are saying when you say "Domain name plus hosting" and saying SSL Cert could make their heads spin. This ain't github!

In all seriousness, I think it could be easier, and I don't think it would take a lot to make it so, but so be it! I will adjust as necessary and hit the imaginary downvote button by movin' on! Anyone who needs assistance on uploading photos, feel free to hit me up for help!

:);):(:mad::confused::cool::p:D:eek::oops::rolleyes:o_O

Cheers~

Yep, that’s something I have to do as well. I think the day is coming when HTTP sites just won’t work easily in browsers.

It is my understanding that search engines are already penalizing site rankings that are NOT https. The other item I have heard about coming round the bend is SVG being the new standard for graphics, even when you are using a jpg, gif or png, word is that search engines are going to look down on those that are not wrapped in an SVG call (an SVG wrapper called "foreignObject" within which you can use any html you want inside your SVG call)! Why I have no idea.

I think a lot of times this stuff is just pushed because someone thinks it'll get them noticed or they think there's a buck to be made down the road.

The main reason I got my domain was so I could have an e-mail address I could keep whenever I switched ISPs, but even now, Safari gives me a warning that the site is not secure when I go to my web e-mail. There have been times w/other sites that Safari won't display because it can't make a secure connection. So, SSL because I kinda want to read that e-mail.

https is easier now than it's ever been, i used to have to do a cron and a bash script but now it's all in the control panels. http is for suckers.

Implementation of said protocol is not in question here, at least not by me. It is the requirement that forces me to use it to show my pictures from my domain that I have a problem with. I guess I am a "sucker" for not wanting to bow to another rule/regulation! Yet I did bow, so excuse me while I go suck it!

why would you have a problem with security you have no problem implementing? spite?

Hoo boy, that doesn't even make sense. It's like putting an image of text into a PDF, LOL.

Yeah, I don't really understand the reasoning behind it myself, just something I heard! I had to use the SVG foreign object to put a image into an SVG piece I did just last month to get the z-index correct for that image within the SVG.

Lawyers ruin everything.
I blame the Ruskies. I always blame them. Learned it during the cold war. That was before global warming, (I think it was... I wasn't there, but judging by the name, it must have been from back before Al Gore invented the internet) but I still blame them.
