A 25 watt Archon head. I love the idea of the half power switches on the Archons, and intend to try one next. But I've also proven (with my H and Custom) that I don't need 50 watts, so the 25 watt model would be ideal. But I don't want a combo since I already have the PRS 2x12 and other cabs to try it with.

There are some really cool additions to the lineup for 2016, but this was the one I really wanted. Looks like I'll be on the hunt for a 50 watter soon. I will certainly try a 25 watt combo first if I see one, but given the cabs I already have, I'll probably end up with a 50. Gotta buy my wife some earplugs for Christmas!

Edit to add: Mesa has a run away best seller in the Mark V25. There is clearly a market for great amps in this power and price range, and the Archon sounds great. Maybe next year...

I'd like to revise my previous post to "For 2016, I was hoping I could come up with a more interesting thread.

Manly men don't wait for things to be perfect, son! Manly men just go out and boldly go where no man has gone before!

So pull up your socks, firm up your resolve...that's it...stiff upper lip! Now go shop for that 50 Watt head, or 25 Watt combo and never look back!

Because it's more important to be playing and getting your tone, than to be wishing and kvetching! ;)

The Archon 25 has different tubes than the original 100 watt Archon. Both have a similar tone to each other. However, the Mesa Mark 5:25 has the same tubes are the Archon 25 (if I remember correctly) but has a completely different tone. An Archon sounds liek an Archon and a Mark 5 sounds like a Mark 5. I've got both.:top:

I hear you Les. I won't wait for one. I'll probably go the 50 watt Archon and ear plugs for the wife route.

I was kidding you, of course!

But as I understand it, the master volume on the Archon 50 is so good, you might not need the ear plugs.

No, the Mark 5:25 has EL84 tubes and the Archon 25 has 5881 tubes.

The master volume on my Archon 100 is the best of any amp I've ever owned. I don't even switch down to half power for bedroom playing and it sounds great. If you went for the 50 head, you'd be fine.

Agreed. On my Archon 100, I keep it at very reasonable volumes. I think the hard part for you...er...most guitarists might be "keeping it at very reasonable volumes". Here's a trick -- turn the treble and bass up a smidge, and the mid down a smidge (same as the old "loudness" buttons on hi-fi stereos).

Hmmm, I think I'll try that and see what happens. :)

I don't have to turn it down low enough to have to use the old "loudness" trick. I can play at reasonably loud volumes. I was just hoping for a 25 so I could get something that at least on occasion I could really open up.

And Les, it's my poor wife that will need the ear plugs! (You haven't heard me play or you'd understand!) :violin:

Gosh, I wish I'd known you before you got married -- I'd have suggested marrying a rich one instead of a poor one! ;) Then again, I didn't marry a rich one, either.

In all seriousness, just get the combo if you want 25 watts. So what if it has a speaker attached? You can still plug into your cabs, and the price difference between a head and a small combo is negligible, really. Plus you'll have a great little grab and go amp.

What is KVETCHING ??

Origin of KVETCH

Yiddish kvetshn, literally, to squeeze, pinch, from Middle High German quetschen

Related to KVETCH

Synonyms: beef, bellyache, *****, bleat, carp, caterwaul, crab, croak, fuss, gripe, grizzle, grouch, grouse, growl, grumble, grump, holler, inveigh, keen, kick, complain, maunder [chiefly British], moan, murmur, mutter, nag, repine, scream, squawk, squeal, wail, whimper, whine, whinge [British], yammer, yawp (or yaup), yowl

And for further review and study...

As a technical term, the "high" in High German is a geographical reference to the group of dialects that forms "High German" (i.e. "Highland" German), out of which developed Standard German, Yiddish and Luxembourgish. It refers to the Central Uplands (Mittelgebirge) and Alpine areas of central and southern Germany, it also includes Luxembourg, Austria, Liechtenstein and most of Switzerland. This is opposed to Low German, which is spoken on the lowlands and along the flat sea coasts of the North German Plain.

High German in this context does not refer to a German who is inebriated. ;)

That's what happens at the other end of thrvowing. Well, it does if you're any good at it.

Yep. The master volume works beautifully on these. Although I think I have mine on the 50W setting because I liked the response better. Or I have it at 100W because I liked the response better. Whichever it is.
