Hey everyone,

Looking to buy my first PRS and was looking for some guidance.

I think i want a custom 24. I am a metal player but also play Pink Floyd type stuff as well.

What I really want is a custom 24 non 10 top, with an Ebony fretboard and the Metal pickups. This points me in the direction of the Floyd custom 24. Only problem is I would rather have the PRS Trem.

So if I was to order this from a dealer would that put me in Private stock/Artist package territory? I really don't want to spend over $3500. Or I can just get a floyd custom 24 and deal with the floyd rose. I mean they are great bridges but the PRS trem would be a lot easier to deal with.

What are your suggestions? what is the avg price increase for what I want? I basically want a floyd custom 24 without the floyd.

Thanks

You would have to go artist specs to get what you want.

I've got a cu24 10 top with 59/09 pickups and I use it for everything however I mostly play metal. It's for sure set up for metal, great guitar ....
I've got a DGT and put m pickups in and that thing is a keeper.

Check out the Experience 2011 custom 24. Ebony board, artist grade top, standard PRS trem, and 59/09 pups. These are fairly hot pups and if you don't like them you can sell easy to fund M pups. These can be had used for around 3 k and are killer guitars. I had one and loved it.

I too like the PRS trem even if the floyd performs a little better. Fast string changes are worth it to me. Remember that with a floyd you could Install the EVH D-tune device for drop tunings and guitar will still be in tune.

Floyd trems are really not that bad and out of the box the PRS Floyd models are built for Metal. Great pickups, nice jumbo frets and of course a Floyd Rose trem. If I were still gigging, I would take my Floyd model out first and if set up properly they not go out of tune.

You could buy the guitar you want and some \m/ pickups and sell the 57/08's or what ever is in it to off set the cost of the \m/ pickups.

To do Pink Floyd, I highly recommend going with a P24Trem with Artist Package. You can play the acoustic chords of "Mother" , then instantly rip into the achingly beautiful electric lead, and go right back to acoustic. I use the P24 Trem for all my David Gilmour stuff (and it's a lot!).

I'd buy the guitar you want and change the pickups. If you don't want a Floyd, DON'T buy a Floyd. That's irreversible. Pickups can always be changed.

You could always get a Floyd and put a Tremel no in it. You can set it to full float, divebomb only, or fully locked.

I've got three very good amps, all have tubes and two of the amps can put out some really high gain tone. However you say it... they break up really nice. Out of those two high gain amps (each sitting on a high end Marshall 4x12 16 ohm cabinet) and I can play metal with any of my PRS guitars. My Custom 24 with the 59/09's seems to sound a little darker than than all my other PRS guitars so I put 11's on it and tune that one way down. My other four PRSi have their own PRS pickups which are not duplicated in any of my other guitars.

So I guess I have two points to make.
1. Make sure you've got at least one really good amp.
2. Consider the new 30th Anniversary custom 24 with the 85/15 pickups. I think you may be happy playing a wide variety stuff with that one guitar.

Never tried the \m/ pickups, but as Hangar18 says, I can get pretty good metal tones with all of my guitars, which have various pickups ranging from the PRS HFS, Dimarzio Tone Zone, the 513 pickups (even at low output humbucking mode), PAF Pros etc. One of the best metal tones I get is from my Ibanez S2120x (slim mahogany body, maple/rosewood neck, piezo floyd) that has PAF 36th Anniversay pickups, which are lower in output.

The ebony fretboard is more difficoult to find on a core PRS without going Artist Package.
If I were you I would try to find a core Custom 24 and test it. Maybe you'll like the feel of the rosewood fretboard. As I grow up I tend to like guitars that feel great and resonate in my hands. Pickups can be swapped out at a later point if I do not like them, but it has been years since I really hated a pickup and could not adjust my sound to it...

i can play metal on my P22 and my Hollowbody Singlecut II, both have 57/08's. I can't agree enough that you should get the guitar you want. Pickup's etc are interchangable, bridges are tougher.

A P24 is a great option as well to think about.
