Long time PRS player, recently wanted to pick up my 2nd PRS and decided on an S2 Custom. I got one from a PRS dealer on Reverb, it came with a small crack in the neck right on the glue joint block near the heal. Now I am caught up in a claim/negotiation process with Reverb. This should have been a hassle free return, but oh well. I came across a video of S2 line factory tour and they said these necks can take over 400lbs of pressure before breaking, so this thing must have taken a heck of a shot or it is a factory defect in the glue joint.

I went and found another S2 custom that I love near me while waiting on Reverb to decide the fate of my other one. I absolutely love these, the sound and playability is among the best I've encountered. Here is my 2nd gripe of the day...and I know this topic is already beat to death. These frets are prob narrower than core and the fret tops were uniformely flat all the way up the neck. I didn't realize it would be a problem until playing for a few days...my fingertips were taking a beating because everytime I slide up or down they are going whack whack on all the edges of the fret. Each fret has an edge on each side that is a sharp angle. I realize it would be cost prohibitive to expect the factory to crown these perfectly, but for a guitar in the $1800 ish price range you would think it could be done a little better.

I still love the guitar, and happen to have the tools and some experience with this so I crowned them myself and problem solved, now I can play it hours a day, day after day with no fingertip aches.

Bummer about the first one. Is the neck cracked, or just the finish?

Nice that you were able to work on the frets yourself. Personally, never had that problem with the fret shape on S2’s, but everyone has their little things, I know I do!

I sent the pics of it to a local luthier I trust and he said it was into the wood and would likely spread. He suggested to pass on it because of how much a repair in that area could affect the resale value.
