Hi guys,
My favorite guitar has been a FBJ Modern Eagle for the past couple years. After I put in a set of 57/08s, I couldn't believe how good it sounded. Well, fast forward to November 2012. Initially, when the NOS Modern Eagles were announced, I checked around a bit to see if there was anything I couldn't live without...i.e. a green one. I was told by 5 or 6 dealers there were no Emerald Green Eagles in the run. Lo and behold, a few weeks later, I chanced upon a link to an Emerald Green. It turns out it was the only one of the NOS Eagles in green. Oh yeah, that also makes it the last Emerald Green ever built.
Anyway, I was thrilled to see mine was exactly like the ME1s used to be. The only problem? That's right, the RP pickups. I never thought they were awful, but after trying some other pickups, I yanked 'em and never looked back. Anyway, tonight was finally the night.
I was going to take the 57/08s from my FBJ and put them in the new guitar. But I decided to leave the FBJ as is. I popped a set of Zebra-coil Dragon 1s in the green Eagle tonight, after adding gold polepiece screws. (I also had a set of black Dragons, but thought the Zebras might look cooler.)
The verdict? These Dragons are real fire breathers. The bridge is warm, but articulate, and pretty hot. The neck gets that sort of soaring, hollow tone. The Dragons aren't PAF clones like I consider the 57/08s to be. I still need to tweak pickup heights a bit. But I'm stoked. She now sounds as good as she looks and plays.
