This is a non PRS fingerboard (horrors!) that a friend thinks may be Brazilian or Madagascar rosewood. Can anyone (11 Top?) be of help as to what it is?
True confession: it’s a 2008 Tokai ES.

Brazilian Rosewood has been on, CITES Appendix 1 since 1991. That's the stuff with the strictest control by CITES. Somehow, I doubt they were making guitars with Brazilian Rosewood in 2008. 1988? Sure. But not 2008.

What does it say in the 2008 tokai catalogue? Should be able to find out with a bit of research
Can’t find one. I found ones for 2008 and 2010. This guitar is labeled as an ES Custom on the guitar and warranty card. It has a Love Rock decal like a Les Paul, rather than the “flower pot” inlay on the headstock. A similar one was discussed on the Tokai forum and elsewhere in 2018. The working theory is that these were part of a custom order from a Japanese dealer. I joined the Tokai forum, but my first post with pictures was rejected by their server as ”possible spam”. I’ve emailed their administrator. Model numbers reflect the guitar’s price in Yen when they were built. I found ES-205 written in one of the pickup cavities which would indicate a price of 205000¥ in 2008. Serial number is seven digit beginning with 08 which is how the Japan built guitars can be dated. The owner of the similar guitar contacted Tokai. They confirmed the year, but don’t keep records of specific instruments that long. I’ll keep at it. As it’s not PRS related, I didn’t think it appropriate to post more pictures here.

It’s difficult to differentiate between dalbergias* (with a small piece). But based upon the instrument and having seen similar Indian, I’d guess that.

* I should get some credit for alliteration though.
I appreciate the quick reply. I’m only on my second cup of coffee, and I breezed right by the alliteration. The guitar appears to be a custom order for a Japanese dealer.

I nominate you to be the Director of our Dalbergia Differentiation Department...

I have a1980 Greco SA1200. It was long thought to have a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard but then someone found the catalogue where it just identifies it as rosewood (no specific type) rather than Brazilian as identified on other models. I'm also a member of the tokai forum though don't go there much

If I can’t post there, I may not go there often either. Funny, another new member did a first most with pictures and had no issues. I thought disabling my VPN might help. It didn’t.

I sincerely hope you're ready with the libretto to my next opera, because it'll be all alliterations.

"You mean your first opera, not your next opera. Since you've never written one."

"That second phrase was a sentence fragment, not a sentence. So WTF do you know?"

"I'm sentencing you to putting up with my fragments for the rest of your life."

"What miserable drones and traitors have I nurtured and promoted in my household who let their lord be treated with such shameful contempt by a low-born clerk!"

"Uh, you didn't make that up. That's what Henry II said that got Thomas Becket killed."

"I'd watch out if I were you. Hmmm. Maybe that'll be what my NEXT opera is about."
