So I thought I would try to learn something new so Im working on some fingerstyle songs. Not the typical Travis Picking but more freestyle I guess. Im working on Michelle by the Beatles and I found a nice video of the guy playing it and the tab and there are a lot of double notes and triple notes being played in the piece.
From watching the video I can hear that sometimes in certain parts where there may be 3 or 4 notes played at once, he is not plucking them all at the same time.
Instead he does a roll and it's very fast and it sounds great. So I tried it with a four note using my thumb for the first note and then my M I R fingers for the next three notes and I can't quite get the speed up to make it sound fluid.
I found a video on youtube where the guy teaches 3 note rolls and he says you always use your thumb for the first note and then your M and I fingers for the next two. So I tried it on my four note piece by using my Thumb Thumb Index and Ring and it popped nicely.
It works for me. Is that the normal way to do it or is it just me cheating? I mean it works and it sounds great. We don't talk much fingerstyle around here.

Haha, I feel your pain, I've been a wannabe picker for years, I can do it and do it a lot but I'm not that good at it. Like anything else it's practice practice practice, and there's no cheating, if it works it works.

I was given a vinyl copy of Arlo Guthries 'Alices Restaurant' many years ago when I was in South Africa, you couldn't get decent vinyl in SA at the time. I was immensely impressed how he manages the melody, faultlessly, all the way through and decided I'd like to do that myself. Forty odd years later I learned it:cool:

There are a few lessons on the tube if you'd like to have a go at it. Also, there's some good Knopfler stuff worth looking at as well.

Thumb thumb index and ring I'd have to try. I imagine it would be more difficult for me to get notes even and equally spaced in time by using the thumb twice.
I do this by placing all the fingers on the strings and then twisting the wrist while picking and it comes out pretty good (don't know how fast you mean ... of course by moving the wrist I tend to be slower than moving just fingers), I think even with 5 notes.

As you are into fingerstyle and you were playing Michelle, I suggest you to check out also "Jenny Wren", another McCartney fingerstyle song which I find fabulous.
