So I bought a 2013 quilt ten top Santana with the control setup closer to the pickups, has hollow/filled in birds, body inlays, no binding, bird on headstock is off white, and truss rod cover has the symbols on it. What model is it? Says 'Santana' on the hang tag, but which? Or is this set of options considered a 'Santana' guitar (not retro, I, II, III, MD, etc) ? Was wondering if it was a limited series due to the knob placement, but I guess the MD's share that. I don't have the extra switch on the guitar like an MD though. Just curious what I have here exactly.

Second question, is the white wire on the Santana pickups, not being used and tucked out of the way a coil tap wire? If not, what is it?

Close, I was off on the year too - 2012. Dangit. My birds are slightly different. Here's a pic of the guitar and my hang tag. I just figured it wouldn't be 'Santana' model, since they have had I, II, etc. versions. Maybe it's like when a band issues an album that's same name as the band later in their career?

From the MD (although the II and maybe III were still in production when the MD briefly came out) to the Retro PRS just called them “Santanas” or “Santana Signatures” and would just change the specs a bit without acknowledgment.

There’s no real name for your guitar to differentiate it, and there’s not like, a huge community of collectors for the model (yet? maybe?) so I’ve just been calling them “the ones with the wrong knob placement”.

Cool that yours came with an extra wire, most (if not all) don’t.

Yeah, the bridge and neck pickup have the extra wire. I was budgeting for a pickup change so I could put a push/pull on the tone control for the neck pickup. Looks like I won't have to swap pickups, which is great - I really like what it has now, just prefer being able to split coils.

What Does The Modcat Say?

I have a Santana 2 according to it, but I don't have the braz board. Also 2s ended in 2007, at least that's what reverb thinks on its internal guides. 2s also have the normal knob layout, mine is closer to the bridge pickup. 2s also have one piece birds, mine are outlined. 2s also have a much nicer headstock eagle inlay, mine is kinda bone colored, all the 2s I've seen had inlay material for the birds (MOP I think).

I have one of those, in Eriza Verde. Mine also happens to have non-stock pickups (EVH Wolfgangs, which sound just fine).

AFAIK PRS just calls these "Core Santanas", not I / II / III. Not MD. Not the newer "retro".

As @sergiodeblanc alluded, this is just one of those weird "generic signature" models.

In All Truth, I Am Not Sure All 2's Have Braz Boards. Over The Years I Have Had A Few Guitars That Were A Little Different Than The Regular Model Of Its Kind And It Was Labeled As Not Being A "Special Or Unique" One. I Have A Unique Santana As Well. Hopefully it Plays As Nice As It Looks And Regardless Of What It Is You Have A Winner. :)
