Your mom.
I was recently rummaging through all the "case candy" that had come with my 2018-model Custom 22 and discovered something I'd completely missed before. Tucked among all the typical paperwork & stuff was an extra boomerang-shaped plastic control plate featuring what is clearly Paul's signature in gold Sharpie. Score!

I had bought this guitar (a regular-old core model, non PS or Wood Library--hell, it's not even a 10-top) brand-new from Moore guitars--a fine dealer in my experience--so I have no reason to suspect that this isn't totally legitimate. However, I'm a bit perplexed as to why the one ON the guitar wasn't signed, or why was the extra signed one tossed in there? (Or did my dealer see it on there, and swap it for me for safe keeping, as I've done seen done with numbered collector ones?)

Has anybody else seen this, or is it a common (or uncommon?) practice for these to show up with a new guitar?

I could see that happening with a pre-owned guitar , but not new - that’s really something! I know that when I met Paul at an event I had him sign the backplate, but got a second one to preserve the sharpie from wear, and also if I ever sell the guitar, someone else won’t get a guitar signed to me.

Contact Moore - those fine folks might be able to shed some light on this.

This. Even on limited edition numbered models, there was some type of documentation that denoted the provenance of the guitar. Either the hang tags or factory could tell regards a limited edition.

A signed backplate likely occurred at either a PRSh-hosted meet and greet, or perhaps when someone brought their guitar to the factory where they met with Paul. The unsigned backplate was designed to protect the gold sharpie signature from wear. If the backplate doesn't have the original owner's name on it, it's still Paul's sig. Just not as personalized, but his sig just the same.

I got two of my back plates signed by Paul at a meet and greet, you were allowed to bring one guitar or three smaller items. Rather than buy blank back plates, I applied several coats of clear spray paint over mine to preserve the signatures.

Moore stocks a lot of PRS. Cool guys for sure. They're always around PRSh, so could be from any number meet ups with him. Yeah, it's off the guitar so it doesn't get rubbed off.
