Obviously I'm hook line and sinker for PRS stuff. I have an american pro II strat. It's an absolutely amazing guitar, I love it 0 complaints. That said, it is my least used guitar and with some heightened summer expenses I've been considering putting it on the chopping block regardless of any SS thoughts. Enter the bright idea of grabbing the SE SS to fill the hole if I did such a thing....

I've test run a fair amount of SEs over the years going back to when they were first introduced. I've had a range of reactions to them from "ew" to "this is pretty decent for the money" but none have ever jumped out as being -super- inspiring to me. I have not tried any of the SS guitars though. Part of my thought though is that, while I would like to keep an S type in the collection, since it's not really a day to day type guitar for me It doesn't necessarily need to be blowing my mind.

Anyone have direct experience owning both an Am. Pro II and an SE SS? Thoughts?

Am I being dumb and should erase any thoughts of selling my strat?

I would only caution you to play the SE that you’re going to buy. There’s just to many variables (that’s me trying to be nice) with that lineup lately. Just so there’s no disappointments. Also a good guitar is a good guitar doesn’t matter what the headstock says. You may have regrets moving that Strat.

Never owned an Am Pro II, but extensively test drove it and many other S-style guitars before finally choosing a core SS. I was actually trying very hard to find a good Fender, but obviously it didn’t play out that way.

The SE SS is one of the better models when it comes to being a good reflection of the core version, I’ve said it before, I’d take an SE SS over any American Fender short of Custom Shop.

That’s said, used market not being strong for sellers right now, you may struggle to turn a profit selling your strat in favor of a new SE SS.

I do have the pieces already lined up, if I acted on this before one of those pieces flitter away, I'd be looking at pocketing about 6-700 in cash all said and done

I have never been able to sell a guitar that stood in my stable longer than 2 months...and i don't think I'll ever will. I guess if you are anything like me you might regret it later.

Besides, an SE is normally affordable enough so that you don't need to sell gear to get it.

I guess I should clarify, I'm not exactly selling the strat in order to get the SS. My strat has been on the chopping block before, and narrowly survived. It is once again being considered for the chopping block, and the notion occurred to me to still have something fulfilling the strat role in my collection, while still pocketing extra $$$. I like strats and having that vibe available to me but I don't play them super often, so having a "lesser" version doesn't seem to bothersome to me

In that case remember that the Rule of Two only applies to active Sith individuals, not to strat like guitars :D

I get your point...I don't know, in my case I'd rather prefer lending non played guitars to friends than selling them (2 of my very first guitars are in that situation). I like knowing that they are out there and can come back home if needed for whatever reason...but that's just me!

If You Like What You Have And You Know What You Have Why Disrupt That For The Unknown Or To Chase Similar? Unless You Make A Bunch Of Money On The Guitar You Are Willing To Let Go Of And Can Do Well Overall On A Transaction Then I Say Keep What You Have. Agree With Sergio On The Lateral As That Is How It Looks To Me.

A "bunch" of money might be an overstatement, but yes I would be coming out ahead... if an am. pro II to an SE is truly lateral then that kind of just would solidify the thought lol

The SE Silver Sky has an 8.5" fretboard radius. That's a very round feeling fretboard. Definitely try one before buying.

This ^^ You're selling a great strat for an ok S type guitar. If you were talking a US version SS that's another conversation. It fights squarely in the AmPro class. The seSS not so much, but they are cheap. I'll take downward of lateral downward move.

Would you trade your American Pro for a Mexican Fender Player? If the answer is no, you shouldn't trade it for an SE Silver Sky.
