Figured it might be fun to compare & contrast the Soapbar 594 and the Humbucker 594; so here’s a clip.

I posted the Soapbar section before; I extended the track to add the Humbucker part. Same amp, a PRS DG30; both are bridge pickups; same amp settings; however, I used an an Xotic BB with the Soapbar, and the Humbucker used a Pettyjohn Pettydrive 2, set about as close as I could get it to the BB’s type of tone (the BB isn't on my board at the moment). Same mic. Rhythm guitar is Soapy on neck pickup, only delay pedal.

These are quickie tracks, I only did a couple of takes, so there are a few clams. Hey, there'd be clams if I did a million takes, I suck at guitar. But you'll get the tone idea anyway. ;)

Edit: Slightly improved balance on new mix 11-17-17.

The guitars sound quite different, through the same amp and mic, etc., right?

They’re both 594s, but they each have a very unique character that shines right through the amp and other gear used to capture the recording.

There’s your answer to “Yeah, but they’d sound pretty much the same in a band setting, the audience could never tell the difference.”

Plus, if they sounded too much alike I’d have a serious case of the guilties...I mean...they’re even the same color...

Wow, that track really makes both shine! The soapy had kind of a relaxed feel to it, the humbuckers had a little more bite, and I think the way your playing reacted to the tones coming out showed their strengths well. I can't say either was better, both sounded fantastic.

Thanks for the kind words, guys!

Definitely, a different vibe. The vintage P-90 tones on the soapbar push an amp and pedal differently than the humbuckers. It’s interesting.

Keep in mind, though, that two different pedals were employed; the BB ‘s compression is, for lack of a better word, “gooey-er” than the Pettyjohn, so it might be a factor. No doubt I also may have set the guitar controls a tiny bit differently. I don’t max out the volume/tone controls on my guitars.

However, I do play a little differently on each guitar. Go figure!

Nice! Never tried a soap bar one. I aspire to be as 'bad' as you one day!

The Soapies are great; I’ve had a couple of the older McCarty Soapbars, and a CU22 Soapbar in the past. I really love the Soapbar thing. It’s got a unique vibe.

As to the playing...I regret that I didn’t spend a LOT of woodshed time with a guitar, a metronome and a good teacher. Sadly, what I’d like to do exceeds the scope of what I can do.

I did do that on keyboards, so that’s my real musical skill. But I love playing guitar more for some reason, so my whole musical life is somewhat backwards.

I really need to practice - most of my time is devoting to butchering my favorite Rush songs. Started to take a few lessons again but hard to fit the time in to practice consistently. Guitar is such a great stress reliever, especially with gratuitous power chords

Well, I butcher bluesy stuff over and over. LOL I write and record these nice backing tracks with my keys, and then screw them up by playing guitar and bass on them.

You’re right about the stress relief, though!
