thinking about buying this guitar from a local guy, but I haven't been able to find any se customs online with similar features. It has 5 way rotating switch and covered humbuckers. Does it look legit? Or is it a fake?

Thanks for the help here is the only picture I have

Looks legit to me. Looks like an older SE 22, when they still had the flat top. Looks like the pickups and switching may be aftermarket as I'm pretty sure these came stock with a 3 way toggle, but overall, a nice find. Sweet top on that one too.

Looks okay to me also. The rotary switch will have been added later as good friend drdoom8793 said. I think you will need to ask the seller about the pickups. They do not look original to me.

I cannot see any strings on this guitar though. If you are still thinking of making an offer you will need to test it fully strung up. Any faults will not be so obvious without strings fitted. If the seller begins to make excuses like he has not got the time to string it up give him a sour lemon to suck on and walk.

I have a 2008 version but without the vibrato. Shown below with the original pickups. Hoping nobody tells me mine is fake!

Thanks drdoom! He said the serial # is J01599 which seems to mean its from 2009 does that align with when they would have had flat tops? Also is $200 a good price for this guitar?

That sounds about right to me. $200 is a pretty sweet price, assuming everything works alright.

Yep, that is exactly how one should look!

MaineGuitar, that one is legit, but the rotary switch, pickup rings and hard case are aftermarket. Either the pickups have been replaced, or someone put covers on the original zebra pickups. Most likely the former, as I don't think the original pickups were four conductor (i.e. can't split coils, so not much point in the rotary). You'll want to find out what type of pickups they are and if the wiring is a quality job or not.

I'd jump at it for that price as long as it's in good shape and the pickups are good.

Another voice added to make sure it's strung up and try before buying. That price seems almost too good to be true with a hard case, 5 way switch and possibly upgraded pickups. Otherwise it does look legit to me.
And yeah, that's a nice looking top on that guitar.

If you`re anywhere other than Portland, the price is realistic for Maine. As others have said, get the puppy strung up. Keep in mind that the nuts on those things are often not very good when they`re stock. That`s a really cheap fix if it`s the cause of any problems. And you might get the price down a little more.

The rotary switch does suggest those pickups will have four conductor wiring options. Who knows, could be a PRS Dragon 2 set or similar which would add greater value over the originals. Speculation aside, this has the potential to be a great deal whatever they are.

Do let us know how you get on.

I'm going to check it out sometime this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes and I'll post some better pictures if I end up buying it.

He did say that it has the split coil positions, does that equal 4 conductor pickup? He also said that the pickups were original, but maybe he bought it second hand and doesn't know what's up.

4 conductor means that the coils can be split. And yeah, unless there was a special range back then that I'm not aware of, the pickups and rotary switch would not be original. The pic @charliefrench posted is exactly what I remember them looking like.

You can split coils with three conductors as well. Semantics, I know. It's possible they're the stock pickups with covers added and a split wire as well, with a flipped magnet in one of them.
