Does Anyone have BOTH an MK and an NF53?

I have both.... a black Myles Kennedy and a White Doghair NF53. They look a lot alike, but that's where the similarities end.

The Narrowfields in the Myles Kennedy are tuned way differently than the NF53. I love and am glad that I purchased both guitars.
I bought the MK first and several months later purchased the NF53 for a decent price!

It is definitely worth owning both guitars!!!

Been wondering the same thing— would having both be redundant…?

I love the NF53 and can’t think of any situation where it couldn’t cut it. At least any situation I would find myself in.

So what would the Myles Kennedy bring to the party?

What I like about the MK (on paper anyway) as an addition to the NF53 (opposed to a different model):
- Large neck
- Humbucker-ish pickups
- 5-way selector/tones
- Hardtail
- Different finish options

That’s where my thinking is taking me…

If you're completely satisfied with the NF-53, it may not be enough to get the MK.
The push/pull humbucker bridge mode. Little better suited for rock to hard rock.
Not that I can't squeeze the rock tones out of the NF53, so you'd really want to play
one/try before you buy or with a no questions return policy.

And locking tuners...

Don't want to give the wrong impression with my earlier post-- I REALLY like the Myles Kennedy model; it was simply a question that's been in brewing in my head lately as I've been looking for a complement to my NF53.

Choosing between the two was difficult, and I went with the the NF53 mainly due to the finish (Black Doghair) and light weight (6 lbs) of the particular guitar. Bought it online which I hate doing, but when it arrived I was relieved and ecstatic LOL!

Afterward, the Myles Kennedy remained on my mind... every now and then I'd see a butterscotch version and by the time I'd secured the funds I couldn't find any with the right finish, grain pattern, AND in the right weight range (sub 7 lbs). Though there is one available at the moment... 🤫

Anyway, what appeals to me the most about the MK is the more rock focused aspects of it, and the extra tones it offers is a bonus too. There are times when I just want to rock out on old Sammy Hagar tunes and the MK seems a better fit for that kind of thing 😎 Also, some time back I had let go of my '52 reissue Tele after a decade of it being my #1; I've been looking to right that wrong ever since... So my rational for having both guitars is... unique.

Oh yeah-- locking tuners(!) that alone could be all the justification necessary to add the MK to my NF53 :D

Sounds like you would enjoy owning both guitars just like I do!!!

Would love to see an A/B comparison of the two

Can’t wait to play both but really difficult to find them in store anywhere. Personally I’m more interested in the MK due to the 5 way, the positions of the knobs and also the slightly more sleek shape to it

This is all great feedback, guys. Keep it coming! When they first came out I ruled out the MK because the last thing I needed was another rock guitar. I went with the NF 53 because I really needed something that was a spitkicking cowtipping chickenpicken country guitar. After spending so much time with it I'm really enjoying the heck out of swamp ash again. Heck, I might even learn to play better if I bought another guitar!

Black MK and white dog hair NF53 for the win!!!

This post really strikes a chord with me (no pun intended!). After some (ok a lot) of deliberation in deciding whether to go for an MK or NF53 late last year, I ended up going for an MK as I favoured the spec with satin finish and locking tuners, with the clincher being that I got a great deal on the MK (£850 off the list price - I’m based in the U.K.) which was about £500 cheaper than the nearest NF53 at the time. I took my time deciding as I thought that I’d only be able to justify getting one of these as they look so similar on paper and are not cheap to buy.

The first positive things that struck me about the MK were the bullet-proof build quality and the range of tones available. I’ve previously owned Tele’s but never really quite bonded with them, including an Ultra in Mocha Burst which I traded-in for the MK (beautiful colour / finish, but even with the S1 switching I wasn’t that impressed with the tone. I also didn’t gel with it playability wise…it just didn’t work for me overall). The MK on the other hand is a totally different proposition and by far the best T-style guitar I’ve played.

The only initial downside for me with the MK was that the baseball bat type neck took a little bit of getting used to. I previously found my US Silver Sky my most ‘comfy’ guitar to play and although it also has a chunky neck (albeit smaller ratio) the MK felt quite daunting to me at first. However, I quickly got used to the MK and now the roles are reversed…now the MK feels more comfy than my SS. I just love it.

This has now put me in a quandry…having only been considering one model (and went for the MK as the best of both worlds) I am now really drawn to going for the NF53 as well. From what others have said on here, they do seem sufficiently different tone-wise to justify having both in the rack. I’d also be really interested in any other thoughts on the subject from folks out there? I’d also been considering a Core DGT or upgrading my pre-loved SS to a new model…I can only afford one in the reasonably near future though…decisions decisions…

I was a big Fender fanboy before, but have become so impressed with PRS that I can’t see me buying anything else now. Hook, line and sinker…

Thanks all and all comments gratefully received 👍

Well, I now have both, and yes-- the NF53 is a more than worthy addition to the Myles Kennedy.

Life at the Monahan residence has been busy these past several weeks over the Christmas holidays, but the dust is beginning to settle and I'll soon have a post about the two guitars.

In the meantime, here are a few videos (below) that helped most when I was deciding between the two guitars. During the research phase, I watched EVERY video, read every article I could find on the two. Unlike most which are simply basic marketing release jargon (frustrating, I know)... these actually provide useful information:

Many "shop" videos are worth very little, but these guys did a good job

A unique perspective from a guy who's actually been using the guitar live, and a useful demonstration of the interactive electronics-- which I find to be better on the NF53 than the Myles Kennedy

This is a good supplement to the one above (should start at 9:45)

Anything remotely associated with Telecasters, you'll do good to Ask Zac ;)

There are a few others I found useful, but these are the essentials IMO.

As for my review of the two guitars, I want to present something that I think folks will find interesting, and helpful. So let me know if there's anything specific you'd like covered ;)

Also been toying with filming a video... One I wish was out there when I was researching... 🤔 but it would be strictly an iPhone video without any kind of polished production...

I started out as MK curious because of the increase in switching features and locking tuners.
Becoming more curious about the NF53 as it is a bit more "True to source"?
Very interested in whatever you happen to say/put together.

Hi there, many thanks for your latest post. As always, very informative. Thanks also for the video links. I’m smiling as the first link you posted was by Andertons…which is where I purchased my MK in the U.K. I always try to buy from these guys as they are just great and their store is wonderful. Only about a hour away from where I live too. This was also my most watched video on the NF53. Their resident Pro-guitarist in the video ‘Danish’ Pete Honore actually bought an NF53 after recording this and you can see how much he loves it in the video. He’s an absolute Tele fanatic and owns a famous purple relic CS Tele. Quite an endorsement for him to go out and buy an NF53.

I wasn’t familiar with the other videos so will enjoy watching these. Thanks again. I saw another video with Rhett Shuill where he said the NF53 is the first PRS he has liked. I think he REALLY likes it too. Interesting that he wasn’t apparently taken with the MK though?

I very much look forward to your detailed comparison review in due course. A couple of things I would be really interested in are your thoughts on the respective neck feels and also how the gloss neck on the NF53 compares to the satin on the MK. I much prefer satin in general so it would be interesting to get your thoughts on this playability-wise and how they compare.

Many thanks again and hopefully converse again soon.

I’ve played them both in a store and also shot them out against an ultra 2 tele. I bought the Mk. The nf53 sounds slightly more tele-ish. However, the mk is tele-enough and way more versatile. Also, the mk has lower output picks and they sounds clearer. Plus the locking tuners. Both are wonderful. If you’re looking for a video, Phil McKnight did one on the know your gear YouTube channel.
