DGT owners: why do you love this model?

For Me it just felt perfect in my hands
I liked the over sized frets as well
and the tone was the perfect tone for me
When I went over to my buddy's I never wanted to play any other guitar
I would try all of the guitars He offered me and always went back to the DGT
So much so that he sent his DGT home with me so I could play it every day
It was the first guitar that I ever fell in love with instantly
The fact that it is gorgeous doesn't hurt either

I go back and forth between this and my 10th Anniversary S2 CU24
I use the CU24 outside the house for lessons and on stage
but when I am home and playing just for myself, its the DGT

That is one helluva sunburst!

That is one helluva sunburst!
Thank you!
I wish it were mine
but its on a kind of permanent loan lol

I got Joe's attention though
He took me to the Dweezil Zappa show
and we had an on-stage experience after the sound check
When I met Dweezil I told him I was going home to burn my guitar
He said Don't do that!
I said it's okay, its Joe's guitar anyway
That got Joe's attention lol

I will add, I love my DGT SE, however, I absolutely loathe the position of the toggle switch. That's the ONE thing I just can't seem to get used to, or perhaps I just don't want to. I feel it's in a horrible position for my taste. That's part of the reason I am attracted to the 594. However, I love the trem, which the 594 lacks.

I have owned my McCarty burst DGT for 6 months now. It has become my number one guitar. Im a huge fan! I’m not really one to be particular about neck and fret board shapes, but the DGT is super comfortable for me. I have a 2004 Custom 22 that feels wide and thin in comparison to the DGT. It takes me a few minutes to acclimate to it even though I played that guitar exclusively for the last 15 years. I also have a recently acquired Les Paul 60s Bourbon burst that plays like a dream. DGT is quite versatile in tones for me. It covers all my bases. I use 10s for strings. The DGT would be the one guitar I would own if I had to have only one.

Thanks for chiming in! I have a’05 20th Anniversary C22 with the wide-thin neck which is probably the same neck as the one on your C22. I adore that guitar. But I just spent an hour playing classic rock on my DGT through a cranked-up tube amp tamed with the Ox and it’s awesome. With the volume rolled down a notch to 9 the tone is thick, rich and creamy and when I roll up to 10 it sears. Rolling back to 3 cleans everything up wonderfully and with the volume on 10 and rolling the tone back to 4 it’s woman tone for days.

Yes! And furthermore, I find the DGT pickups pretty hot. I’m coming from playing 57/08s since they came out. I thought they were pretty hot output. I guess I’ve lived a sheltered life.

There are things I absolutely love about mine - the neck shape and width, the playability, and the range of tones I can get from the pickups, especially in the center position. While the split tones are just "good", I'd never rely on them as a substitute for say, a Telecaster. That said, there's something magical mine does in split mode in the center position, and it sounds like no other guitar I've ever played - it's kind of a nasally scooped tone, but in a really good way. Great for skanky funky stuff, and it sounds fantastic with low gain OD. Mine is a 2008 so these are earlier versions of the pickups, and maybe that has something to do with it. I did do the resistor/capacitor mod to mine to bring it in line with later models.

There are a few things I'm not wild about. The neck humbucker can be a tad woofy if you're not careful to compensate in some way. And regardless of what the marketing materials purport, there is a fairly noticeable volume drop when in split mode (just as with every other guitar I've played that has a split feature). This can be remedied with a boost pedal, but it's just something to be aware of.

I guess I'm fortunate in that I don't get hung up about the pickup selector position. I think anyone who owns/plays/gigs multiple guitars gets used to dealing with the ergonomics of different platforms. Whether it's my Tele, Les Paul, DGT, or funky cheap Supro reissue, it takes me a few seconds to get reoriented and then I don't have to give it a second thought. But I get it - everyone's different.

Note: I also have an SE DGT. I really like it, but I don't find it to be all that close to the Core in terms of tonality, despite what I've read about other players' impressions. The SE is much brighter, and the center position split tones aren't even in the same universe. But I actually like the fact that the SE is its own thing and has its own sound. They're in the ballpark and they're generally similar, but not really the same at all.

You may want to look in the electronics and see what, if any, resistors you have in yours. Mine is a 2011 and it has resistors that are different than what they use now. Mine does not have a drastic volume drop when I tap the pickups. Mine uses a 2.2K on the neck pickup and an 8.8K on the bridge pickup. They use 1.1K and 2.2k these days. I have also seen that it looks like they changed what they are using again for this year. They are now using 2.2k resistors on both pickups. I also noticed that they changed a bunch, if not all, models over to using a .033uF cap on the tone controls instead of a .022uF.

Thanks for that! I'll open it up and take a look.

It covers all the bases and more. Many artist models in the industry are cosmetic gimmicks, well….maybe a tad more or less windings in the pickups. The DGT has the genuine touch and experience of the musician.

Maybe that’s why it’s so loved.
