I made an impulse buy. I saw a used 2012 gold top DGT with hollow birds at GC near me.

bought it after I played it for a few minutes. Played great sounded really good. The front of the guitar is in near excellent condition.

I noticed some green tint on both pickups which I assume is oxidation and it had been played and gigged a lot from the back scratches and what looks like belt warn spot warn thru the paint. But I bought it anyway ,

1. is there a safe way to remove that green , or should I look into replacing the covers ?

2. Is there a way to restore the warn area that shows the wood, on the back, or does the whole back have to be done . I would have a pro do this of course.

I read some some ideas on #1 in other forums, but I am not sure how safe for the guitar some of these ideas are so I wanted to check with this forum.

I appreciate any feedback..... I have 3 1/2 weeks to decide if I will keep this guitar. I probably could of waited and for a hundred or two more got a pristine DGT ...

Thanks !

Jerry

There is something to be said for having a guitar with signs of wear (if it otherwise meets your needs) and not having to worry about "that first ding". Some people pay up for "relics".

But I can relate to wanting something "perfect". I would play it a bit more before deciding, keeping your eye out for another that "speaks to you". You are unlikely to get a "bad one" but you may have limited options that you can play, depending upon where you live.

If you find you can, literally, get a pristine one for $100-200 more, and you feel a need to have an unblemished guitar, I would buy another before going so far as to refinish, even if only the back.

The PRS Support page has some care and maintenance tips, including what to use to get the tarnish off the pickups. The PRS PTC can of course refinish the back of the guitar for you, and they do an amazing job.
