DG30 back online

Sooooo...... I blew up a power tube on my DG30 (maybe related to an amp switcher that I was using...maybe just infant mortality...who knows????). I have a few amps, so I let it sit longer than I might otherwise, and in the intervening period, and I slutted out with a few other amps. Some PRS (like the tricked out 2-channel C that Martysnarf was kind enough to let go of) and some not (like the most excellent Mesa Roadster that I had to become re-acquainted with...)

Although I was looking forward to getting the DG30 back online, I was dedicated to getting NOS power tubes for the thing, so I didn't rush it as I had other options. In the intervening timeframe, I became accustomed to multi-channel amps for gigging and was fat, dumb and happy, figuring that who wants the hassle of gigging a single channel amp anyway???... The DG30 was great, but I'd probably just put it into the at-home rotation from now on.

Fired it up and I immediately remembered why I though what a special amp it is. Clean to crunch using volume controls on the guitar (and a Mark 4:20 clean boost) and an OCD and/or an Exotic BB pedal to take it from there. Wow, what a great amp. Maybe absence makes the heart grow fonder, but it really is a special amp. And maybe it shouldn't come as a surprise, but DGT's will never sound better than they do through this amp.

Did a band practice through it, then gigged it this weekend with the DG stoptail and DGT. I was so enamored with it, I had to snap a couple of crappy cell phone pics at the end of band practice (see below...)

I am an amp slut though. I made the mistake of physically going to my favorite music store to pick up some strings (as opposed to the tiny shop around the corner that doesn't carry anything of real interest much less PRS...) I wonder which of my PRS guitars does metal best??? I'm about to find out I think....

Since you have the Anniversary amp sitting so close, have you profiled the DG30 against it? I know the design went in a completely different direction that the 25th, but he's supposedly using the new 30 in place of his other gigging amps (HXDAs, 25th, Super Dallas) and those are pretty diverse. Can the 30 really cover all of that territory?

Angle #2...did you, or are you, considering the 50w version? To my ears, it was very much like the SuperD and more "Grissomish", if that makes sense.

The only thing I'd add to your awesome amp bordello would be some nice Persian-esque rugs. Maybe some tapestries.

Actually, I don't have the Anniversary amp (that I know of at least!!) I have the HX/DA, the MDT, the DG30 and the 2-channel C (thanks Martysnarf!!!) I certainly can't speak for Grissom, but the beauty of the DG30 (in my opinion) is how well the sweet spot is set. At reasonable small club gig volume, it can be set for the perfect crunch. And it handles pedals perfectly. I have an OCD and a BB Exotic as overdrives, and between the combination of those pedals and the natural girth of the DG30, it really is sweet.

Heck, I'd consider anything put out by PRS, but I haven't really thought too much about the 50W version of the DG custom because as it is, I typically set the master at something like 2:00PM on the DG30, which sounds just wonderful. But at noon and below, it starts to loose something. For the sorts of gigs I do, the amp setpoint is wonderful. Having never played the 50W version, it's hard to imagine that it would work better. Having said that, one of my favorite non PRS amps is the Marshall 2466 (a 100W amp.) I definitely like that better than the 50W 2266 even though it requires a lower MV setting.... Soooo... Now you have me thinking... Thanks for nothing Boogie!!!!

You know, the more I talk with other PRS amp owners, the more I find that the 2:00 master setting to be "the" spot on the single channel amps. And at least with the SuperD, it's not just headroom, exactly, but girth (you hit on the right term). There's enough power to really move the speakers without pushing the amp to insane volume levels. And I love the bass rumble.

My impression between the DG30 and 50 was that if you liked his HXDA tone, go with the 30...if you liked his Super Dallas, go 50.

The Marshall character is missing from my arsenal at the moment. I might have to look at the 'dark side' again. Thanks Aristotle. And Bob, you can be a pretty bad influence in this department. If you lived less than 3 hours away I'd be in real trouble.
