Anyone out there using something other than V30s as far as speakers go with their DG Custom amps? If so, what are you using, what have you used, and what’s your take on the amp with something other than the V30s that come in the matching cab?

I’ve used mine with Celestion/Mesa Black Shadow 90s in an open back cab, and it sounded great, though I think the pine cab with the V30s designed for it, that I also have, is more to my liking.

I still want to try mine with a set of Alnico Cream 90s. In any case, I’d say the amp does well with different types of cabs - for example, I’ve played mine through a Mesa Recto 212 with V30s, and that sounded nothing much like the DG cab with the V30s, but it still sounded good.

It all depends what part of the frequency range you want to emphasize, etc., and of course, as a famous recording engineer whose name escapes me said in an interview, it’s not about the sound of the cab, it’s about the sound of the cab in the room. Because you’re hearing room as well.

The answer to this question is *usually* the speakers that you like the tone of the best. I've found that I usually like every amp that I try the best, with the speakers that I like best.

I have a cab coming for a different amp with a pair of the Jensen Blackbird Alnicos; in addition to that amp, I’ll give it a go with the DG30 and report back, but I was told 6-8 weeks before it’s done, so it’ll be a little while.

Let me guess...you just did a little shopping for one, are just settling in, and are just sitting down...? :)

Not at all.
He’s much more thoughtful about his acquisitions than that.

True. He's also thoughtful regards sticking up for folks he really doesn't know well, and isn't part of the usual "gang." He's his own man, and for Les, it can be sometimes be a lonely existence.

Some of prefer it this way, so we can do our work without distraction or interruption. I think Les appreciates it when he sees beyond the immediate, and looks ahead instead of needing to look behind. That is known as forward thinking, and shows progressive work, while only reflecting on his past so as to realize what could have been done better than previously.

Sort of like what we do at year's end in review of the previous year.

I’ve always related strongly to my role as Alfalfa.

(Pictures Les singing... “I’m in the mood for love... simply because you’re near me.)”
Yes, I actually remember that episode, which I probably saw somewhere around 5 years of age.
