I ordered the DG30 head and cab from Eric Martin during the experience. I've had the cab for a while (talked about it in another thread). It looks exactly like the factory pictures The amp came early Thanksgiving week and I've had a chance to mess with it a while.
The amp is awesome, with an incredible variety of tones. There's a lot of harmonic information, the 2x12 cab sounds great.
I've kind of settled in with mine with the master and the volume both about 1 o'clock. Most of the time I'm running it through a Dr. Z Brake Lite to level out the volume. The sound is big and rich and complex. As I played with it I noticed that the volume really wants to be above 12 o'clock. The amp sounds ok with the volume below that but once you hit noon magic begins to happen.
The master works very well. I've cranked the volume and run the master very low and gotten a nice tone. I played around a bit using the master to control room volume and using the Brake Lite to control volume to compare the results. At the same room level, as you'd expect, using the attenuator with the amp master at a higher level gives a much richer tone, but I wouldn't have a problem dialing the master down low for some late night playing. The key to a rich tone is getting volume knob above noon.
Wide open the thing roars. The cabinet pushes a lot of bass, it's glorious.
As Hans mentioned in his review, there's not a ton of gain available, but it takes pedals well when you want to push it. I usually use an EP boost to round out single-note lines and give a little extra fullness. I've also used an SL drive, a sparkle drive, and a Bogner Ecstasy Blue with great results.
The amp on it's own is a rhythm players dream. Chords have crunch and bite, but there's amazing note definition. It cleans up well with the volume knob on the guitar...it does some really nice things rolling the volume off, and moving either to the neck pickup or engaging a coil tap. There are a lot of really, really nice sounds. One of my ideal rhythm sounds is Grissom's "Whiskey Cryin'" and this gives me that throaty crunch that he gets.
I'm really pleased with the purchase...so much so that my Sweet 16 combo will probably need to go away since it's not going to get played much. My Dr Z Maz 18 hasn't seen much playing time over the last couple of weeks either.
It's a lot of amp, that does a lot of sound really well. I'm very pleased.
I've got multiple DGTs, and now the DG30, Grissom and the folks at PRS really know how to design instruments and amplifiers.
