Hi everybody, I'm quite new to this forum, I bought this guitar a months ago but I'm still discovering its sound.
My pickups are the 59/09 which are described as an overwound PAF from PRS site. PAF are known for their dark sound and a little compressed sound. The sound I get from this guitar is exactly in the opposite way ! Bright sound, high definition and attack, in a stratocaster way...
It's just my guitar or is the specific custom24 caracteristic ??
Any experience ?
Thank You

This is the info I found:

"First introduced in 2009, PRS 59/09 pickups are articulate while providing rich harmonic overtones. With a powerful bridge pickup and a touch of brightness in the neck, these pickups are the perfect tool to acheive clarity and definition with a punch."

Which is pretty spot on to your assessment!

Since you are talking about a 2012 Custom 24, try the middle pickup setting: Double Humbucker. I love the tones on this setting. It seems to cut out a lot of the extra brightness in the tone and has a nice "jangle" as opposed to a trebly twang. Also, I tend to roll back the tone a bit more on my Bridge pickup when playing high-gain distorted material. The 59/09's have a much wider tonal range than I am used to with other guitars. It took some getting used to. Hope this helps.

When people speak of PAF tones, they're many times associated with singlecut guitar designs. So you have to consider that in the equation. I have 5909's in a stripped 58 and a McCarty standard. The 2 guitars sound quite different despite some similarities and having the same pickups.

Welcome to the forum! I'm looking forward to pics!

As mentioned above, I find I can get a wide range of tones by using the volume and tone knobs along with the blade switch. As a rule, I find that my Exp Cu24 cuts through the mix without sounding too bright.

There's no real PAF sound. the original PAF pups varied wildly so take any talk of PAF like qualities with a pinch of salt. Indeed, I've read a few times people describe some original PAF pups as sounding just as you described... But that wasn't a given.

Work with the pups changing things like their height, messing with the tone and vol controls and amp and pedal settings. Sometimes things need dialing in rather than it being there right from the start with everything on max.
