Custom 24 - Changing Switching

I'm really interested in getting a core model Custom 24. A lot of the ones for sale in my area (new and used) have the 5-way switching configuration. I really prefer a switching setup where I can get: (1) bridge, (2) bridge + neck; (3) neck, plus those three options in coil split mode, for a total of six sounds. I know this can be achieved with the Custom 24-08s that are out now, but there aren't many of those near me, and no used ones. So, I was thinking of getting one with the 5-way switch and then having a tech re-do the switching to my preference noted above.

Some of the ones near me use the 5-way blade switch, other used ones use the 5-way rotary selector.

For the 5-way blade, I'm thinking I would just replace the 5-way blade with a 3-way blade, and then install a push/pull pot to allow me to go to split coil mode.

For the 5-way rotary selector, I'm thinking I would replace the rotary selector with a 3-way toggle and, again, install a push/pull pot to allow me to go split coil mode.

Are either of these mods fairly standard things that a tech should be able to do?

This is definitely something a qualified tech can do for you. I used to own a '97 CE 24 that was modified just like you suggested. The 5 way rotatory was replaced with a 3 way toggle and a push pull on the tone pot for coil splitting. Worked great!

When I bought my Core CU24 with the 5 way rotary I considered doing the same ... but after playing it for a while I actually grew to like the 5 way rotary switching a lot. Something to consider.

Thanks! That greatly expands the universe of guitars I can consider.

If I find one with a rotary switch, I’ll definitely be replacing it with a 3-way toggle. I don’t have a preference between blade and a toggle, but I just can’t stand the rotary switch. I had one on a Custom 22 I got in the late 90s and I hated it - just could not get used to it and found it difficult to quickly turn to the 2, 3, and 4 positions.

Look at the Freeway switch if you are changing out the rotary , 6 possible positions , no push pull pots needed
