Cu24 heading my way - should've gone 24-08?

Title says it all - spent the last week trying to pin down a nice Cu24 that fits the price sweet spot for me, and settled on a Wood Library model from Wildwood.

Love the looks, excited to try a Fatback - though I'm indifferent on that - but genuinely wondering if I should've stuck with the 35th or 24-08 for the added versatility?

I splurged on this guitar, and as a very amateur player, won't be adding any more 4-5k guitars for awhile, hence the 24-08 plan for something more versatile.

I assume the regular 5 pos. blade will clearly suffice, as it's the OG setup for PRS over the last 35 years, so perhaps I'm over-thinking this.

My two guitar collection includes this incoming piece, and a 2020 LP Standard 50's, so 24-08 or not, I feel as though I'll be pretty well covered for the foreseeable future.

TLDR: are the extra 3 positions of the 24-08 really a huge deal for someone like me who's strictly a man cave player who falls very much in the "amateur player with much room to improve" department?

Either way, it's a beautiful guitar that I'm very much looking forward to receiving soon!

Thanks all,

Ty

For me, I prefer the 3 way. I have 3 CU 24's one with the blade. I do not use the split tones much at all.

The 3 way allows for quick switching live.

I also swap out the pups for Suhr Aldrich pups.

Nah, stick with it, you'll love it.

I adore the tone selection from the 5-way, and that along with learning the nuances of manipulating the tone and volume pots will provide you with a great variety of tonal bliss. Besides, the fatback versions I've heard all sounded especially great! FWIW, mine's an older Cu24 AP ('06) with a 5-way rotary, and I'll never part with it.

Thanks! I'm confident I'm ending up with a real beauty regardless, and I need to quit overthinking it. I'm amazed at the sheer variety/options in the core series guitars - easy to get bogged own in "analysis paralysis."

I've spent at least 2 weeks straight looking and debating and studying (and asking permission from the boss - err wife), so glad I've finally made the leap!

I wasn't sure what to expect from the 4 way. I like it so much I converted a 3 way push pull PRS to 5 way. You'll have plenty of tonal variety.

The old rotary rotary is another story.

Looking forward to hearing your take on the fatback, always wanted to try one.

I wish I had more experience with these guitars (or PRS specifically) to make a more informed comparison - but will certainly share my thoughts! Should arrive tomorrow so we'll see!

I've got a 408 and a Custom 22--which has the same 5-way switching setup as a "regular/non-08 switching" Custom 24. Quite frankly, two of my favorite split-coil settings that I can access via the double mini-switches on my 408 are exactly the two that you can get through the Custom 24's standard 5-way switch:
• neck split + bridge split
• neck split + bridge HB [this is my favorite between these two]

The ones you'd be missing are the neck & bridge each split by themselves (which are fairly weak), and finally neck HB + bridge split (which to me doesn't sound as great as neck split + bridge HB). So there you have it. The Custom 24 has come all this way after decades and is still a great guitar. The "08 switching" version is a cool added twist, but IMO doesn't diminish the regular one's versatility. And there's still something nice & direct/streamlined about NOT having to mess with those extra switches, too.
