Core McCarty with Pattern Regular Neck?

Hi everyone,

I just scored a Goldtop McCarty a few days ago a guitar I have always wanted. I had never played one and with Covid19 going on couldn't really go out and try one out. Most of my experience is with the S2 Line up and recently a CE.

In the excitement of prospect of actually getting one at a price I could afford I never asked about the neck profile. I just have never really played a PRS neck I didn't get along with so it never crossed my mind.

So this just has a chunky neck in my opinion. My guess is this is the "Pattern" neck but I got to tell you if feels liek somethign thicker. Pattern regular is my preferred neck shape but in all the diagrams "Pattern" doesn't look that much different?

Does PRS make a McCarty like this with a pattern regular neck?

No. The original McCartys had Wide-Fat, and recent ones have had Pattern. The DGT has a neck that's closer to Pattern Regular, but slightly different.

So is a 2015 an original McCarty? I thought they had been around for years?

All the info I can find says its a "Pattern" Shape but wow that's really thick.

They've been around since 1993-4 I think. There was a McCarty II, but that was discontinued and they brought back the McCarty.

At some point well before 2015, PRS went from the Wide-Fat, Wide-Thin, and Regular, to the Pattern, Pattern Thin, and Pattern Regular.

The differences between the necks are pretty minor, at least to me, and I've been playing PRSes since 1991, so was used to the older necks. I could hardly tell the difference when I started getting the newer ones.

The thicker necks definitely contribute to the tone of the guitars in a subtle way. I love 'em, and actually find them easier to play. I've got several of the PRS neck shapes. For me, they all work.

Here's a pic of the specs. Also, keep in mind, each neck is hand finished. There is bound to be some minor differences. Congrats on a killer Goldtop!
