I tried a search with no luck.

Can a 57/08 be coil split or coil tapped (yes, I understand the difference between the two)? What is the purpose of the third, white wire? If it can be done, is there a wiring diagram available? Thanks.

Bill

Can you be a little more specific as to which schematic to look at? I have looked at all of the schematics previously and am not sure of the one I need. This is a single cut guitar (not sure of the model) with two volume/two tone, and three-way switch.

Thanks.

Bill

I want to know if it is possible to split or tap a 57/08 pickup and if there is a wiring digram or schematic that shows how to do it. How is the white wire used in doing this?

Bill

I understand. Let me try this a different way. No one can tell you how to wire up your SC for a coil tap until you tell us how you want the guitar to function in the end state.

Examples:
1) Both pickups are tapped with a single mini toggle switch that you add somewhere
2) Both pickups are tapped with a single push/pull tone pot
3) Pickups are tapped separately with one pup for each push/pull tone pot
4) Something else entirely

I'm guessing you're looking for something along the lines of Example 2 or 3. If so, that's a custom wiring job and none of the schematics on the website will serve your needs. You're going to have to replace your stock tone pots with 500k push/pull tone pots and find someone to draft a schematic - although there is probably one on the net somewhere.

My suggestion would be to send it to the PTC and let them do it for you.

The white wire is the coil split wire. When grounded, one coil is ,in essence, "shut off".
However you choose to ground this wire (push/pull pot, mini toggle, or whatever) is up to you. Push pull pots are simple because you do not need to drill any extra mounting holes. Just replace a volume or tone pot.

I just got done doing this on 5 different PRSi.

From an earlier thread. http://prsguitars.com/forum/showthread.php?1847-NGD-and-new-member&p=26081&viewfull=1#post26081

The Red wire is the tap wire for BOTH pickups. I can assure you of this, I called PRS tech to verify a few weeks ago.

For PRS pickups:

Neck Pickup:
White = Hot
Black = Ground
Red = Tap
Steel Braid = Ground - Back of Pots, or Output wire Braid as long as output wire braid is also grounded to one pot.

Bridge Pickup
Black = Hot
White = Ground
Red = Tap
Steel Braid = Ground - Back of Pots, or Output wire Braid as long as output wire braid is also grounded to one pot.

NOTE* The hots and grounds are flipped between the neck and bridge as far as color

D'Marzio has a boatload of wiring diagrams you can use to figure the rest out. I use only 2 volume controls, no tone. So my wiring won't work for you. But, the RED wire is the tap wire.

True unless they are a 2 conductor pup with a split wire like McCarty's, RP's, 57/08's, etc. They just have a single conductor (black) with a braided ground and a white coil split wire.

If you have two volumes, two tones, and a 3-way toggle switch, and if you want to wire your guitar to stock wiring, I'd go to the PRS schematics page and scroll down to "Singlecut" to see if that diagram works for you. You can also look at "SC245" and "SC250" and you'll essentially find the same diagrams. That said, there are some different wiring schemes in a singlecut (a Ted SC245 for example), so you'll really need to provide us with the model and/or the potentiometer layout if you're looking for us to provide more possible options or solutions. Hope this helps!

The OP stated he had 3 wires.

Every PRS guitar I have rewired has been a 3 wires with a steel braid. 1 white, 1 black, and one red with steel braid. I have NEVER seen a PRS pickup with the wiring configuration you speak of, and I have seen Dragon IIs, HFS/VB combo, 57/08s, PRS #6, and 59/09s. Unless PRS makes different pickups for Singlecuts, which I have also owned with PRS #6 pickups. ALL of those pickups have had the same wires. All of them I have added a Push Pull to for tapping, or McCarty switching as I can't stand the rotary (My Singlecut had McCarty switching, but I converted the tone control circuit to a volume control circuit as I do not use the tone).

Not trying to start a fight here, just sharing my own experience as I just went through this myself.

But I see what you are talking about now after some Google time. This looks like something that might be done for aftermarket PRS pickups?

HOWEVER, these are 57/08s, which have not been made available to the aftermarket. So we really don't know what he has until he shows us a pic. :wink: Or tells us.

OP can you post a picture of your control cavity, switch cavity, and your pickup wires so we don't all start fighting over each other assuming what you have is standard?

EDIT: Never mind......LOL

And yeah, a photo of the control cavity would be very helpful.

Definitely not wanting to start a fight, just providing info.

PRS has at least three different pup wiring schemes.
1. 3 wire and ground (red, black, white,braid) as you described
2. Single conductor w/ braided ground
3. Single conductor w/ braided ground and white split wire.

The 3 wire + sheild pups can be used with the 5 way rotary switch, the others cannot. You'll see that PRS specifies whether or not a pup will work with a rotary or with McCarty style wiring.

I have a set of RP's in my CE24 that are wired as # 3 above.
The Dragon I's in my Singlecut are like # 1 above (same as the ones you have)

Not a great pic but here they are:

The HFS/VB, Dragons & all others compatible with the 5-way switch do indeed have r/w/b/braid wiring configuration. Those such as the McCartys and 53/10 have only black/white/braid. They are not 5-way compatible. I mention those 2 pickups specifically because I just swapped McCartys for 53/10s on my '05 SAS. To add a bit of confusion, I have in my possession a Dragon 1 treble pickup (used but in its original box even) that has red/white/black as well as a solid ground conductor (no braid) and a GREEN wire.

57/08s come in all 3 versions, I went through this on BaM and there was photos of all 3. The 57/08s in my Stripped 58 are option 3. Single conductor w/ braided ground and white split wire. Same goes for SC-58s.

Pickups wired for the 5-way rotary have the red, white, black, and braid.

Pups wired for McCarty switching just have the single white tap.

I have seen both combinations on many different kinds of pickups.

There's no such thing as pups wired differently for aftermarket.

I've just coil split my Tremonti SE with two push/pull volume pots. I fitted the Seymour DuncanHot Rodded Humbucker Pickups as well, it was very easy and the result was well worth the effort. I'm an electrical engineer so had no issues with drawings;)

Not the one I did above, both original pups were two wire and screen, not steel but tinned copper. I split the coils "by hand" by removing the braid tape and physically split the coils and added an extra wire. The SD's are better split though.

I am adding two of the PRS Push Pull Pots and coil tapping two 4 wire pickups (Dimarzios). What is the schematics for soldering to the PRS push pull pots for coil splitting
