I've got a 1991 CE 24 which I'm sending back to Maryland to see if they can fix it (some luthiers wrecked it). I used position 8, series single coils for my main tone. In the mean time, I'm looking at
a CU 24 with HFS/VB pickups that is listed online.
I'm not familiar with the 59/08's, 09's
that come with most of the current CU 24 guitars. The tone I want is
this one: https://app.box.com/s/l2heth3pz0br33rd79br. It's a 44
second clip--dead space after that.
Can a CU 24 with stock pickups duplicate this sound?
I'd really appreciate a reply from you older clean playing CU 24
owners.

The tones will be slightly different if you went with the CU24 instead of another CE. It will likely be in the same ballpark, but not quite the same. It's just the inherent difference between a mahogany neck versus a maple one. You will probably gain some warmth and lose some high end snappiness.

I can vouche for John Beef's statement. I currently have a CE24 and CU24 right now. Though, I would attribute the warmth and high end snappiness (as John put it) to a combination of construction type (set neck CU vs bolt on neck CE) as well as the maple/mahogany combo that he already mentioned.
