CE24 vs S2 Custom 24

Sean, Take a deep breath. You’re getting a great guitar. Like every guitar ever made it will need to be set up for YOU. Sweetwater will set it up to factory specs, but you’re not a factory. If you don’t like the tone, raise or lower the pickups depending on what you want to hear. Until you have it set up (professionally) with your brand of strings, to your liking and play it through your amp, you’re basically pissing in the dark. Remember you have tone controls on the guitar and amp to get your sound. It may take 30 days before you really understand what a fine guitar you’ve bought. Going to Guitar Center will tell you next to nothing about YOUR guitar. Take a chill pill or see a psychiatrist, but CALM DOWN!

I wouldn't be second guessing your choices at all, the CE24 excels at the styles you described, and yes for metal stuff the CE neck is a bit nicer than gloss (S2, core or other wise) imo.

Aesthetically I personally prefer the violin carve to the asymmetrical bevel on the S2s, shallow or not. I have a core custom 22 and the carve is absolutely noticeably different depth compared to my SH CE24 but the CE 24 still looks great and none of that really impacts playability to me

I’d say to stop overthinking and just enjoy your sweet axe when it arrives.
This helped a ton to hear! Thanks for your advice and your positive encouragement, I appreciate it brother.

It's a big purchase for me and I really want to make sure it's the right guitar for me. Hearing your input really brought me some great perspective from another metal player.

Dogrocketp, take a deep breath lol. I think you're the one getting worked up brother 😂 I'm just here asking some friendly questions lol.

Even though checking out a guitar off the rack at GC won't be the same experience as playing the guitar I ordered with my exact strings through my amp, it's not like playing the same model guitar off the rack is going to be like playing a totally different guitar like it's another brand or model completely lol. They'll still be at least in the same Ballpark or realm tone-wise.

Yes, guitars have minor tone differences between different serial numbered guitars of the same model, but it isn't like between two les Paul's one won't sound like a les Paul, or one will sound like a telly or something lol that's just nonsense 🤣

Like I mentioned to another member on here, I'm just being cautious because it's my biggest guitar purchase so far.

And when I finally found a CE24 in person after I ordered one, it sucked and the action made the playability terrible, so it was a bad example of how great a CE24 could be. And that made me second guess my decision even more.

Imagine this : you found a great deal on a dream car of yours, and even though it was more than you've ever spent on a car, you splurged and got it. But you weren't able to check out before buying. And then after purchasing it and before going to get it, you see one of the cars you just bought brand new off the lot and it looks like crap and drives like crap, wouldn't you be worried you made a mistake with your choice?

That's where I was coming from.
Not everyone has $3k to toss around without thinking twice lol.

I'm sure you were trying to be helpful and I appreciate the input and tips, but the last part was a bit much and some people could take it as ill mannered. That's just how I was raised though. Kindness first, because you never know what others are going through.

Here's an update for everyone :
I tracked down a few CE24s at different shops. Played a few in person and the ones that were set up well played like butter and sounded amazing.

Seeing how well a CE24 with a great setup plays, and getting advice from all of you guys, has really helped me overcome the doubt I had.

Everyone here who has been helpful and kind, I appreciate your help a lot. Your guys' input and advice has made all the difference and it's gotten me super excited about the guitar that should be arriving soon!

Thank you guys for helping me out and getting me stoked on my guitar! I appreciate this community and the advice all of you have given me 🙏🏼🙏🏼

I can't wait to get my Faded Blue Black Smokewrap CE24 😀 I'll post some pics when I get it if I can by then!

If you liked the S2 Custom but not the nitro neck than maybe try an S2 Standard Satin.
It is an all mahogany body and the smoothest neck I have ever played.
They are definitely not the prettiest PRS guitars but they do have loads of midrange bite.
Oh, and a lot cheaper!

I’ve had both at the same time, both really good guitars (although I have neither now). IF, I could have one back right now, it would probably be the S2, but I suppose I could flip a coin and be happy with either. Mine were a couple of years older. My S2 had the S 85/15 pickups and a Pattern Regular neck shape, which was definitely thicker, fuller than the Pattern Thin of the CE. I think both models might be Pattern Thin now? Not sure. I thought tonally, especially when you apply a fair amount of gain, sounded pretty similar to each other. Split coil tones were good on both too. I think you’ll be pleased with your CE, post some pics when it arrives. Here’s an older pic of when I had both:

I didn't know the S2 Standard had a Satin edition! I'll have to check those out for one of my next guitars! Not as expensive is always a plus too! I'm always down to save some money where I can haha 😅

Thanks for the recommendation man! 😀 Much appreciated 😊🙏🏼

Would you say that some of the PRS models have more midrange than others? And if so, do any stand out to you as more mid heavy or more mid scooped? 😀

What in particular did you prefer about the S2?

Was it the neck carve?

I think you're right and now both have the pattern thin neck. Is that the thinnest neck that PRS makes?

It's good to know that they're tonally similar, especially when using high gain! I was thinking the CE24 might be more mid scooped and I was hoping that wasn't the case. I really love the rich and full mids the S2 Custom 24 has! I was hoping the CE24 was about the same tone but with a bolt on satin neck, and a nicer maple top lol 😅

Hearing all the high praise for the CE24 has been super reassuring though! I saw some hate around the newer ones and was bummed out at first lol

I wouldn't claim to be a PRS expert, so take my opinions with a grain of salt. I have owned a few SE models and currently own the before mentioned S2 Standard 24 Satin, two S2 McCarty 594 SCs and one S2 594 DC. To me, the 594s have more midrange. When I think of a guitar that has midrange bite, I think Les Pauls. I have a few of those. The S2 594s are very close to that tone. My S2 Standard Satin is more mid scooped than the 594s but not nearly as much as say a strat or shredder guitar with a 25 1/2" scale. To me, the shorter scale length guitars have more midrange than the longer scale length guitars. One thing to note about the S2 Standard/Custom guitars is the location of the pickup switch. It is located under the trem bar in the normal playing position. To me, it is very annoying. I recently just picked up the new SE NF3 and the pickup switch on that model is in a much better position.

I think neck wise the OP is really going to enjoy the pattern thin neck carve on the CE24. When I’m thinking prog metal my ce24 is what I pick up
I'm hoping so too! The guitar got into town on Saturday morning but didn't go out for delivery because of an issue with the label so they had to reprint relabel it and after that it got a scan saying on its way to the final destination facility and no update since. The scheduled delivery day is tomorrow 7/15/24 so I'm trying to stay patient and let it get delivered on the scheduled date. But I'm honestly pretty bummed it's been in town at a FedEx facility all weekend and hasn't gone through its journey to its final facility where it would go out for delivery from.

But I'm crazy excited about my CE24 and I can't wait to get it!

The guys on this forum and you especially have been instrumental in helping me see the perks and the positives of the CE24 😁🙏🏼🙏🏼

Just an update for everyone! The guitar arrived yesterday!! I was able to finally open it super late last night and the beauty of it blew me away!

The stain on the wood gives this crazy 3 dimensional look in certain lightings and it looks awesome 🤯🤯😀😀

It plays buttery smooth and the satin neck is literally one of the best feeling necks I've ever played in my life, if not the best. Idk if the black nitro satin neck is the reason why, but it's slicker and smoother than any other natural colored nitro satin neck I've ever played!

The only thing I was a little bit bummed about, was that there wasn't reveal binding on the guitar. It was hard to tell if there was or not in the pics on the Sweetwater listing and my rep said that there was. The other guitar in the same finish had reveal binding so I thought this one might also. That's just a minor cosmetic thing though lol.

That ones just annoying because there were like 4 different instances where my Sweetwater Rep miseld me or lied to me and I ended up having to call back and work out the mix ups each time. And the reveal binding is another thing added onto that ever growing list of lies or "mix ups" from my rep lol.

He hooked me up with a free gig bag that was over $200 and a discount on a bunch of strings for all the "mix ups" lol.

So I think being misled about a bunch of stuff while ordering the guitar was a bummer and it's frustrating.. And then getting it and finding out a cosmetic thing I was excited about wasn't on the guitar like my rep said, just added to the overall frustration with him and the situation lol. But it isn't a reflection on the guitar because it's really an amazing instrument and it looks sick still!

I haven't had a chance to plug it in yet but when I get home from work tonight that's what I'm going to spend my night doing 😁 I literally can't wait to hear the USA made pickups!

Since I'm new to this forum, I'm not sure how to add a Pic to my posts. Can anyone help me out there? I wanted to post some pics of my new CE24 for you guys 😀

Didn’t you say somewhere in this thread that it has a smoke wrap finish? The smoke wrap is what it sounds like—covers up the scraped edge.
I did! It's a faded blue grey smoke wrap finish. But the other guitar that's listed with the same finish has the reveal binding, and when I asked my rep about it, he said there should be reveal binding on both even if the pic for my guitar doesn't show it clearly since they're both the same finish 🫤

I actually thought when I first saw "smokewrap" that a wrap finish meant it totally wrapped around the sides from the front edges, but I thought I was wrong when I saw that one of the two guitars on the SW listing had reveal binding. I figured I just didn't know the terminology. At least now I know for the future! I guess SW should have listed the guitars seperately because one was technically a faded blue grey burst and the other that I got was the smokewrap version haha.

Anyways, it's just a minor thing. Not a reflection on the guitar. The guitar is still crazy beautiful and I still love it!

I figure i'll get more PRS's in the future and I can always get one with reveal binding for one of my next ones😎
