Hi,

I'm trying to find some info on a used CE model that I'd like to buy, but can't see on the https://www.prsguitars.com/csc/year.html page what the number before "CE" (as in 4 CE 26764) refers to. Anyone, please?
By the way, any remarks or "catches" with regard to the CE model (mahogany/maple top)? It sounds fine to me.

thanks/regards

The CEs are fabulous guitars. I own a couple. Some people think they are a step down from set neck models but that is not so.

The "4" refers to the year, in this case a 2004 with serial #26764.

yyyya....that makes sense, thanks a lot.

I suppose it's natural to think that a set neck is "better" than bolt-on. Then, among the more experienced folks (does not include me) many may regard mahogany and set-neck as one, as in the Fender v. Gibson thing.
I hope I will be in the possession of one soon. Going in-depth on this guitar now, would be like naming someone else's pet, so I'll get back to you when I have it, if I may.

thanks/regards

I got a 1990 CE24 as my first PRS a few weeks back. Coming from a '96 LP Standard (which I still adore), the thing just slays for days! Good luck...and post some photos!

Hi,

1AMeghK

I'm having some issues with posting images from links from Dropbox or OneDrive. The links are sound, see for instance https://www.dropbox.com/s/pf5yl17jld5ff9o/DSC_0016.jpg?dl=0 .
Do I have permission to post images?

It sure does. I'm coming from a Carvin DC127 mahogany/maple top neck-through. Great rhythm guitar, but never could get it to work as a lead guitar. Actually, I've always thought Carvin guitars are PRS "inspired" (but with a twist), and the playing action is almost identical.

The lead sound of this CE24 really reminds me of the LP, would you agree? It's got that classy thing about it, I don't know how to describe it.

Also, the effectiveness depends totally on the setting of the CE24's volume knob. I didn't see that on my previous guitars.

My CE24 is a mahogany/maple neck and top from 2001. If it's from 1990, yours is alder, am I right?

ROTARY POSITIONS

If this thread is still alive (don't make me post this newbie question to the main category :top:), from https://www.prsguitars.com/csc/switching.html :

ROTARY POSITIONS
  • Position 10: Treble pickup
  • Position 9: Outside coils- deep and clear - parallel
  • Position 8: Series single coils – Warm version of the "in between the treble and middle pickups"
  • Position 7: Parallel single coils – Crisp version of the "in between the treble and middle pickups"
  • Position 6: Bass pickup

What do positions 7 and 8 mean? All four single coils in parallel, resp. series? Isn't there an "in between the treble and bass pickups" position? Still sounds fine to me, though. I love this guitar

:p:p:p. :prslogo: :p:p:p

I believe 7 and 8 are just inside coils. Running them series and parallel create different sounds. This setup won't allow both humbuckers in the middle like a LP will and I really like both humbuckers too.

Nice looking guitar!

Thanks. It has some kind of 3rd tier flamed top, in that it takes some scrutiny to make out the flames, but flamed it is and it's a gem.

The one in your avatar looks great. Normally green is my guitar color. What model is yours?

Does anyone here have any experience with winged locking tuners? I get the stringing procudure, but strangely I don't know and can't find how to unlock them in a civilized manner (without pliers, that is).

The guitar in my avatar is a CE24. It has 5708 squabbins rosewood rings and push/pull coil splitting vol and tone pots. I can split one or both pickups. kind of neat. You don't need to tighten the wing tuners very hard to get them locked. If you need pliers to unlock them then they are too tight. Both my CEs had wing tuners and both got switched to phase 2s. The wings look cool but the phase 2 and phase 3 tuners just make string changes much quicker. I didn't like the ratio of the wing tuners either.

I don't find putting the strings on that hard. In fact, I can see that if you get the hang of it, it's quite a good system. However, I don't think the previous owner (who had it for a year) ever changed strings, so maybe the locks are rusty. I don't tighten the wing tuners at all, I just turn the tuning peg in order the engage the lock.

Soundwise, it's the perfect guitar for me. I can't describe it, it's a chemistry. It's a kind of hybrid of everything. Of Gibson (mahogany) and Fender (bolt-on), of humbucker and single coil (that it's an HH guitar, but not with both H's in the middle). Conceptually it sounds nuts, but it works.

Do your CE's have different wood combos? Why do you have two? Don't tell me it's because of the different colors :D

Both of mine are mahogany body with maple tops. I got the ce22 off of ebay because it had maple neck and dragon 1s which I was interested in and it went pretty cheap. I put phase 2 tuners on it and different pickup rings but other than that it is stock.

I got the ce24 a little later because I was impressed with the first one and through some negotiations got a decent deal. It got phase 2 tuners, rosewood pickup rings and 5708 pickups. I sent it to PTC for refret and setup after a local guy messed it up. I spent more on it than I should of but it is sweet.

Both CEs get all my playing time because they rock. I gigged with the 22 last night and it was good. I just can't believe they don't make them anymore as they are a combination of great things. I would love to hear what a one piece trem would sound like on either one of these CEs.

I got a 94 CE in a trade a couple months ago and it had a horrible setup and the trem was screwed all the way down to the top of the body so I have not spent much time with it. Earlier today I gave it a thorough set up and with the help of a video John Mann posted on installing one of his bridges I have it dialed right in. What a guitar now, and with the Dragons it is a fire breather. It kills me I let it sit for as long a so did. Great guitar.

Why you holding out on us?

I am at least three late in NGD's........I think one of these days I will just do a group shot to post in the family photo thread, but here is a couple of the CE for now.

This is was pre-setup and you can see the bridge totally decked. It was cranked right down and the top has gouges where the bridge chewed the top when someone rocked the bridge this way. At least they are hidden from view.

That's a fine guitar.

It makes me want to post some pics, but I still can't post images to my own thread. Is it a permissions thing, or am I on an international terror list, or both?

I have some fretwear on the lowest frets, where I hardly go, so no problem there, but I am slightly apprehensive about my cobalt strings. Some threads suggest that there is no problem, but I doubt it. Cobalt seems harder than steel and the issue seems similar to the days when people switched from nickel to steel strings, while frets were still nickel. What's your take?
