Cases and Resale Value

The paisley and other cloth covered cases are actually more resistant to scuffs and tears than tolex cases that scuff and rip easily. All of mine have nary a rip, tear or scuff.

Think about it: You might often brush up against something rough wearing a pair of jeans, and the fabric stays together, where tolex can get clobbered.

It's a good thing there aren't tolex pants (OK, I know someone's gonna post a pic of vinyl assless chaps, but you get my drift...). Woven fabrics can actually be pretty tough. Ballistic nylon like what they use on luggage these days is even tougher, and that's the kind of thing most gig bags are made with. They should do the same with hard guitar cases.

Oh wait, they do; the Ameritage case that came with my PS PRS acoustic is covered in ballistic nylon, and so was the one that came with my US Core acoustic. Mine's 11 years old and has not a single tear or visible scuff. It's pretty incredible stuff.

I should add that I've been using higher end gig bags for many years (leather or highly padded ballistic nylon, like the Incase, the RB, and now my GigBlade), and I think they're equal to a hard case in protection for all but shipping or sticking into the baggage hold of an airplane.

Yup, that’s the way. I’ll be bummed when my black S2 gets dinged, but oh well. The Santana is already used, so no worries there. Back in the dirt bike days when I got a new bike, I might just unload it it’s first day out, let go and step back, just to get it over with.

Surely the case is designed to take the dings and scratches rather than the guitar - most of my cases have been scuffed, scratched & dinged to buggery but guitars are fine. My 94 Artis ii (see avatar) has the leather case but is a bit bruised up on the outside - that doesn't bother me at all as far as I'm concerned - it's doing its job :)

That Approach Is Better Than Missing That Triple And Coming Up Short.

I’ve never been too concerned about the case before deciding to buy a guitar. I’m not terribly concerned about resale value, as I’m not paying top-dollar for any of my guitars.

If it’s important to you to preserve everything, by all means use a different case or bag. Unless you can keep the guitar immaculate, there’s not much point to that.

When I did some recording in Europe I took some gear with me just in regular cases and they put it in the first class closet. But I also rented some gear from a company in London, because cartage would have been expensive, and in France (where I recorded) a duty would have had to be paid on my own gear (!).

All of the rental company's gear, including the instruments, was packed exactly like your pic.
