Cases and Resale Value

Hey PRS friends.

I recently picked up my first DGT Core. Of course it comes with the hardshell PRS case. I am thinking about the future and potential for guitar resale (I don't want to sell it, but hey, who knows what may happen!). Given that I would want to get the max amount in a resale, I assume anyone buying a top tier core would want the case to be immaculate? Do many of you just put the new cases in storage and get on with gig bags?

I have both the single and double Mono bags. But I am also considering buying the new PRS ATA Molded Case. I think it might be overkill since I have the Mono bags, but I am just looking at the ATA case as the best possible insurance and protection for moving the core around - Mono vs. ATA Case.

Am I crazy?

For me, it depends on the case itself.

I've got some core guitars with plain black PRS cases. Standard issue. Those get handled normally, and they've picked up some scuffs.

I've got a couple of core guitars that came with the lovely paisley fabric cases and gorgeous detailing. Those cases rest in black plastic wraps under the bed for long term storage, and the guitars themselves get very nice padded gig bags and careful handling.

=K

Thinking of resale is a mentality I can never get with for a tool. Use it and enjoy. If you have to sell someday. You have to sell. No sense in worrying about things like a standard issue case.

But I'd personally use the mono bag. I use the same bag for most of my guitars. Balance for ease of transport and protection.

Unless it’s a boojie paisley or leather custom shop/private stock case it’s all fair for condition. They should take a hit sometimes so your guitar doesn’t. Wouldn’t reduce the value for me, unless the seller want to drop it a hundred or so for me to get a decent molded case. Hate the weight of the stock PRS cases anyways.

All my gigging is in the Mono M80 dual case. The OHSC stays at home, though I may use one if I’m just taking one guitar to a jam session. If I had the Mono single, I’d probably never use the hardshell case. But it does affect sale not to have the case that came with it, so I do keep them. I wouldn’t want to lug an ATA case around, for sure.

I couldn’t care less about the condition of a case as long as it’s functioning properly. It never factors into my decision on whether to buy or how much to pay, and when selling, I don’t lower or raise my price based on the condition of the case. If a potential buyer tried to nickel and dime me based on the condition of the case (nobody ever has), I’d probably tell them to go pound sand.

I mean... I had a guy ready to buy a beautiful telecaster of mine, but when he realized it was a different Fender gig bag model, he passed entirely.

Beautiful telecaster is an oxymoron! 🤣

Some people feel really strong about gigbags. Look at the people still complaining about the bolt on line coming with one.
