Car and truck lovers unite.

I’m headed back to Ron Fellows racing school in Nevada in July. They place me in an identical Z06 for the 2 day course. It’s the only place I’ll ever floor “this” beast. It’s only racing against time, not other cars at the same time. Still, it’s exhilarating flooring it upwards to 150mph heading into a hairpin curve on this road course. I’m pumped to go back.
I spent a weekend at Le Circuit (once an F1 course outside of Montreal). It was fun to see what my car was capable of - I drove it there. While going fast was exciting, the best part was a private hour on the skid pad.

And now for something a little bit different...

My wife got a Tesla Model Y last Friday. Her new job has a commute that's about 45 minutes long. The self-drive is what tipped her over on getting one. She'd demo'd it a couple of weeks ago and was really impressed. Picked hers up last Friday.

I got a chance to drive it on Monday when I went to trade a guitar. I drove on the way there, just to get to know the car. It's nicer than I expected it to be. I used the self-drive on the way home. What a trip! For the first ten minutes, I sat there waiting for something bad to happen. I felt like I was anticipating someone throwing me a ball. My hands were ready to grab the wheel and my foot was ready to hit the gas (not sure I'll ever stop calling it that) or the brake.

After that, I relaxed just a little. It was quite incredible. For the most part, it drove much like I would have. It accelerates and brakes a bit harder. It signals its lane changes properly. Navigates a roundabout well. I was on the highway and it was in the left lane. Someone was coming up on us, and it moved into the right lane to let them pass without them having to slow their approach.

If I've got a quibble, it's with the navigation. That's different than the self-drive. It wanted to take a route that I wouldn't have taken, so I took over briefly at that point.

It felt like living in the future. It's something that's been on the horizon for over a decade. It's not quite ready for prime-time, but it's not too far off, either.

Sounds like the future too!
I'm sure there is a huge market for this type of "driving" out there but count me out...lol.
The day I can't drive myself is the day I cut my license up.
But with a 911 and 4 liter plus bikes I might be a little biased:p

I don't think it'll ever replace for-fun driving, but I could sure enjoy getting a bit of my commute time back. It's in no way ready for the level of disengagement that I'd want--I'd like to have some reading time. For my wife, who just wants a little less stress at the beginning and end of the day, it's good.

Today I'm replacing the rear shocks on the minivan. It's unfortunate that it needs new shocks at 56k miles. I've never done suspension work, but this looks easy enough. I've got it up on jack stands, which wasn't as tough as I thought it would be. The only jack points are the pinch welds, which are just barely big enough to get both the jack stand and the jack on it. Kind sorta cheating to the side with a pinch weld-adapter on the jack. Fun stuff.

The Tesla drove me to the library earlier to get the documentation I needed from the AllData database. Just amazing. For a former tech-junkie like me, that's like mana from heaven.

I went as far into this new tech as I'm prepared to right now last weekend by buying the wife a new Honda CR-V Hybrid.
So far as fuel economy goes it's doing better that it says on the box so pretty happy so far.
My little nod to the emissions problem we have created on this planet.

So I spent an hour and a half driving around to try to find a tool. I’ve got one side done and one rear-shock assembly left to replace. I both hate and enjoy working on cars.

I feel your pain.
I was "volunteered" to change the lower front control arm bushings on my daughter's then BMW 325i.

If I had known what was really involved and the need for "special" BMW tools I would have paid to have it done at a shop and just told her I did it...lol.

Totally with you on that! 15 years ago, bought some new shocks and other suspension parts for my girls 325 convertible and when I got around to seeing what I would need for tools, I gave up! Still have the parts in the garage, car is gone!! She got rid of it while I was out of town and did not throw those parts in the trunk, which is what I would have done ;~))

Here is one I doubt most have seen! An anti-tank Vespa! Yes, you read that correctly!! Who needs a horn when you have something like this ;~))

The Vespa 150 TAP was an 'anti-tank' scooter made in the 1950s from a Vespa scooter for use with French paratroops (troupes aéroportées, TAP). Introduced in 1956 and updated in 1959. Modifications from the civilian Vespa included a reinforced frame and a 75 mm (3.0 in) recoilless rifle mounted to the scooter (obvs). ( https://militaryhistoria.com/vespa-150-tap/ )

I need one.

The way I see it, the road rage never happens if I am piloting this! I politely ask others to move, and they comply ;~)) Does not look comfortable though!! And how does a 3in gun have no recoil? Never the less, I am sure Mad Max (yes, you) would approve (and/or Master Blaster)!!!
