I decided instead of a ZM or Mira, I want a 7-string for my next geetar . Naturally I gravitated toward the SE7, but after playing around and researching, I've kinda "fallen in love" with the Schecter Hellraiser C7 FR S. I can live with a stop tail/ normal trem, the Floyd on the C7 isn't necessary... What really blew my mind was the Sustainiac system on it, it just creates some killer sounds that never end with the flip of a switch.

I could buy the SE and just install the Sustainiac, but the system is $250, and the install seems pretty in depth, especially if I custom wired it to use push pull pots instead of mini toggles.

Anywho, anyone have any experience with Schecter guitars that would like to encourage the purchase or tell me to run?

I have a schecter C1plus and it's a good guitar. I think it has G &B pickups but they are very hot and I used this guitar for detuned stuff. What I like...good raspy tone for detuned stuff, great tuners nice and smooth maybe grovers?, stays in tune, mahog/maple body set neck. Don't like...pots are too stiff, rolling vol pot down bleeds off too much higfh end. If PRS didn't exist I would play these before I would play Gibson or Epiphone. Since PRS does exist my schecter is for sale!

Aww C'mon! A Schecter?!?!

This is the worst lookin' guitar I've ever saw! What? You buy a guitar like this and I bet you get a free chain wallet, huh? Oh.. it looks good on you though!

I had Schecter guitars when I was buying guitars in that price range. They are not terrible and their set neck guitars are a real bargain on the used market. But I got rid of the last Schecter I had because of the cone shapped neck carve on the "V" that I had. The neck was really small around the first fret and "wide and huge" around the 12th fret and beyond. I didn't like that at all but I guess some do. Obviously these days I prefer PRS over Schecter and would recommend any PRS over a Schecter but I don't really have anything bad to say about them.

There is nothing wrong with schecter. The upper end import stuff is 2 steps above the SE line in terms of quality of parts and electronics. They've really toned down the goofy inlays and purfling garbage in the last couple of years and are making the guitars more mature to appeal to a broader audience. This year, they started putting their new USA pickup line in the imports and have upgraded the floyds to use schaller posts. You can even get stainless frets on the new Banshee Elites. If I had to choose between an import schecter and an S2, the schecter wins.

I've got a couple....
This C1 E/A was the first guitar Mrs. Bebop bought me some years ago...

The last guitar I bought (a few months ago..) was this limited edition Corsair. (crappy pics...)

Both were purchased used. Both are solid, quality instruments.
Funny thing is, the Corsair has become my go-to favorite since I got it..... wasn't expecting that. I had a hair for a 'budget' 339 / 335 type guitar, tried quite a few that were disappointing, then stumbled upon this one.
Absolutely perfect in stock form.....

Only had one experience with Schecter. Forget the model but it had finish issues and a dead fret. It went back and I got the Bernie Marsden. The Bernie is a superior guitar, however I'm sure I just had some bad luck and the Schecters are decent guitars for the most part.

I haven't really liked Schecter's since 2002. That was the last year they had real Duncan pickups, after that it was 'Duncan design' and they started doing a lot more string thru body construction and I'm just not a fan of that. I will admit though that the C1 A/E that was mentioned above is a decent guitar, but I personally just can't get into their stuff. They are sort of a 'we're into marketing into what's cool at this moment' company, kind of like Ibanez was with the shredders in the 80's and the nu-metaller's in the late 90's/early 2000's.
A good friend of mine who works on my guitars and is a certified tech repair person for Schecter, Fender, Gibson, and a myriad of other companies said as far as 7-string guitars are concerned the best one's you'll find are by Ibanez. No one has seemed to actually get their formula right. Schecter is an ok bargain 7-string, and if the neck is comfortable the PRS one may suit you. In the end though, I would AB a bunch of them blindfolded and see which one was the best

I had one of these for a while...

For the price, it's really hard to beat. Quality parts and great pickups. Only reason I sold it is because the 27" scale is a bit too much for me. And, as much as I have tried, I never seem to bond with 7 string guitars.

They make it in a 6, 25.5" scale now... GAS lol.

I've never been a huge fan of them personally . I Like my Prs and esp guitars ...just sayin

Wow, quite a few more replies than I expected.

This is the PRS forum, right?:iamconfused:

That it is, but this is the general discussion forum... The catch all smorgasbord... An area for 'everything else' .

Regardless if I go with the SE 7 string or the Schecter, they'll both run about the same price, if I decide to go SE and install the Sustaniac... I guess I just wanted to see if Schecter was "worth it"... And no ones said why the SE 7 would be a better choice, other than this is a PRS forum, and the SE is a PRS.

I've had 4 Schecters over the years including a SLS FR-S. I really liked them all and the SLS FR-S with the Sustainiac is insane! It's a must have for many Steve Vai covers. I wanted to have one installed in my white Ibanez Vai signature and the lowest quote for just labor was $400. If you want to step up to an made in the USA try out the Jaćkson PC-1. Their Sustainiac isn't as good as the Schecter but the rest of the guitar is flawless.

Yeah, I understand, but there are several non-brand owned forums for researching guitars. It's different if we're talking about something that PRS doesn't make. Just comes across a little faux pas(to me) asking for advice on another brand because you liked that brand's model more than the PRS model of said item...whose forum you're on. Asking for comparisons between the 2 would be different and probably acceptable. Kinda like walking into Pepsi and asking why Coke tastes better. No biggie to me, just a little odd.

I wonder if I could get a PRS guitar with "Stripper Chicks" inlay the same as the Schecter XXX model I used to have a long time ago. That would be cool!

I would love to try a jackson PC1

Its very cool that PRS doesn't feel the need to moderate and delete posts about non-PRS products. If you read the original post, the OP says he likes the Schecter because of the sustainiac. This is something PRS doesn't offer so its fair game for discussion without need for moderation, IMO. This is the general discussion forum. Therefore, its a free for all, and that has included discussion about non PRS guitars from time to time.

What people do not realize is that discussion about other brands is a form of feedback that is helpful for PRS R&D purposes. If someone isn't buying a PRS product because something else has something more appealing for features...whether is be because of a sustainiac, SS frets, etc, then that helps PRS design their products to meet the needs of todays musicians.
