Accents are hard. You have to have a knack for it, combined with a great ear. Try it; even with a good coach, most can't do halfway well.
But ya know, he wasn't directing that film; he was hired to entertain in the role, and at that he succeeded. It helped the film that Julie Andrews has mega-talent.
