Brent Mason model - Tone question

Hi all,

I'm a newbie here so be nice to me :wink:.

I am strongly considering buying the Brent Mason model, thing is I'm from Ireland so will never be able to try one out. Videos that are on YouTube display its versatility well except for high gain lead tones. I play in a cover band so this guitar is perfect for the tonal qualities. I would be concerned about the 408 Bridge pup, does anyone know if it would be good for lead/heavy tones? I currently play a Les Paul standard with a Seymour Duncan in the bridge so I'm hoping ye will come back to me and say it will be even better than that!

Hey Dave and welcome! Hopefully you stick around. As far as the 408 bridge I think it handles gain extremely well, and that's coming from a metal player so if we're talking dirty/heavy rock tones I think there is no question that it will absolutely nail them. I have to say it but they really knocked it out of the park with those pickups.

That's what i wanted to hear! We play everything from 70's pop, through 80's hair metal, country right up to dance/modern pop crap :laugh:. So this guitar would have it all for me....thanks for the reply and I'll report back if I do decide to go with it. On another note I was also looking at the new PRS S2 Custom 24, any thoughts on that? I know the 2 are completely different but have to think of the pocket aswell

Its a great guitar. I havent played one yet but simply put its a USA made PRS with an SE bridge. Quality wood, quality construction and a little cash left over for adding modifications I think they are going to be amazing and the people I know that have played demo models dig them!

The 408 pup are great hands down. I played in a cover band doing mostly modern rock to metal and all I used was my Sig Limited. They handle high gain GREAT ! I will say say though that the 408 in the Brent Mason model is the more narrow one compared to the Sig Limited so I don't have any experience with that pup but the 408's in general are great I think.

I use my BM model for a 70s Hard Rock Ensemble, it holds up well for Sabbath, Priest, Motörhead, etc. As long as the amp has enough gain your should be fine. I've used it with my Marshall Sl-5 and Bogner Uberschall with great results. Obviously, it's not quite the same gain levels as my maple necked, Korina bodied Sc245 with a Tremonti bridge as you would expect but the extra versatility of the BM pickups is worth the trade off.
