deep in the raspberry...
Ok, so the wife and I decide to take in the Virginia Highland games today. In preparation, on the way we stop at the ATM. I withdraw $200.00 for travel money, admissions, etc.. I get my receipt and my card, but the ATM is beeping like crazy at me. I double check to make sure I have my card.

150 miles away, I go into my wallet to get the admission fee and expecting to see lots of twenties, I see only a few ones.

Holy %}*{%}*#€£{€, where the hell is my money????

At that point I realize it is still at the ATM. At least that is where I left it!

Man, I cannot describe how stupid I felt or how bummed I was. That had to be one of the stupidest thing I have ever done. As my wife and I discuss my idiocy, one of the men at the entry table says the he heard that ATMs will suck the money back in if you don't take it right away.

So, 11 1/2 hours later I get to where I can call the bank 800 number and tell my tale of woe to the phone teller. She puts me on hold. She comes back and says that the money had indeed been sucked back into the ATM. She takes my info and files a claim which could take up to 10 business days to resolve.

The outlook is much more hopeful as I type this. At least I know that whoever visited the ATM after me didn't get a lucky, untraceable windfall at my expense.

I'll post the outcome when it happens.

The ATM Gods appear to have been watching over me today.

Man, that's a punch in the gut, then get sense of hope! Hopefully, you'll come out ok.

Ouch. At least the outcome seems it will turn out just fine:top:

I use to work for BoA as an ATM Network Tech after hours. I sat by ATM Network Support and heard all of the wild stuff that came in late night. ATM's are well monitored and I suspect you'll be fine.

Thanks, Jesse.

One of the interesting points here is that the bank already had a procedure in place for this kind of thing. Makes me wonder how many people have been boneheads before me...

When I was there BoA had well over 20,000 nodes. I am certain that number is way higher now. That's head spinning amounts of activity. There's little they do not say daily. If the ATM sucked the money back in you're fine. It just takes a few days to go through the process.

I've left my card in the ATM, maybe more than once. You can't get it back once the card is "eaten". Being stuck without your card becomes a huge PITA when you're dependent on it. For a long while, I didn't use ATM's that actually took your card into the machine.
