best blues tones?

Call me crazy, but John Mayer’s (JM) tone is more pop than blues. When I think of the blues, the tweed circuits and their descendants come to mind. JM has that scooped blackface tone, which screams 60s pop to me. Sucking that much midrange out of an amp just kills a good blues tone. The reason why so many guitarists use Tube Screamer-derived pedals with blackface amps is due to the midrange hump that is integral to the design of the Tube Screamer.
