Hi all, just a short post re my 2000 McCarty. It was supplied with the McCarty humbuckers and I gigged them for years. Then the 5708 came out and i managed to snag a new unetched set, and so it began..........

I must have swapped 6 or 7 sets of PAF style pickups through that guitar! And now in 2021 ive just put the original (much maligned?) pickups back in and im really loving that darker, slightly overwound Paf type tone.

Who woulda thought?

YMMV

Sorry guys, those unetched 5708s were sold in a 2010 cu24 a while back.

I'm not looking to stir up a hornets nest but in all truth, while they sounded very good, they weren't the unobtainium that others think they are. Ymmv.

The original mccarty pickups have been a revelation to me, bit hotter and darker.

Original McCarty pickups are highly regarded. The early one's were covered Dragon Bass pickups. Also, if you have a set of McCarty pups with overly-rounded corners, hang on to them. They sound great.

I *almost* traded my old McCarty with those pickups for a stripped 58 at a highly regarded vintage store here in Nashville. They asked what pickups were in my guitar and I told them the original McCartys but they didn't believe they were stock because of the overly rounded corners and offered a bad deal so I walked.

Of the 3 cores I own, these are probably the best pickups.

I'm really loving them again.

Of the 4 or so Prs guitars I own, the McCarty is the brightest when played unplugged. So the added darkness from these original McCarty buckers sounds great in that guitar.

It's interesting how your tastes change over time but im convinced I was listening with my wallet and internet goggles on when I changed them first time round.

Haha

I have been chasing your tone with no avail, your McCarty sounds HEAVENLY!

Has anyone ever done a tone comparison between the PRS 57/08 pickups and the Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates pickups?

I attribute most of that to the amp and fingers. However, that McCarty is a semi-hollow and I've altered the circuit only when the coils are split so the neck is a partial split and the bridge I attempted to tune to get the resonant frequency peak as close to a tele as possibile.

Maybe one day I'll find some time to sit down and record a demo.
