So I was with a band that had some success starting in the late 90s...recently one of our songs got picked up by a TV show for a small clip...2 of the guys now want to record some new songs....the earlier stuff was written 100 percent by myself, although the other 2 guys stated in interviews that they wrote it...stealing my credit and I can't stand either of them or their egos...now do I record more with them or move forward as I literally can't be in the same room as them lol...btw the drummer who's a great guy doesn't seem too excited either but it was a nice chunk of change for a 2 minute clip in this show...my wife says F em what are your thoughts?

Your wife is right.
There are enough talented musicians around that you don’t need that kind of aggravation. (And life is often easier if you just go along with the wife - “Yes dear. Of course you know best”)

Run like a mother f@#$er from that toxic pair of nut sacks!!!

Stealing your cred is just so not cool of a d@¢€ move!

You got screwed! Sorry you got that, man!

Just makes me fume!!!

bull**** is bull****. Tell them to do a retraction of the lie they told. Then and only then, you'll consider recording. Make sure you're songs are copyrighted and they can't record them!

Yeah they're copywriter BMI ....I think overwhelmingly it's a bad idea...would love to find someone to write with...

Why cut off your nose to spite your face? Take advantage of the fact that the former band's material got licensed, the band's name is then already established and now has credibility.

To try to reinvent the wheel by establishing yourself as an independent songwriter makes very little sense, when a band name already has licensing history.

Write songs alone, register the copyrights. Send them your registered copyright material. Let them do their recording thing together, alone, or however they want. Record your parts remotely. Take whatever money your share is, plus the performance royalties for being the songwriter, keep your publishing plus take those performance royalties, and laugh all the way to the bank.

Once your copyrights are registered with the Library of Congress you're safe.

MAKE SURE THAT THE LICENSE TO USE A SONG REQUIRES THE TV SHOW TO FILE PROPER CUE SHEETS WITH ASCAP, BMI OR SESAC (WHICHEVER P.R.O. YOU'RE SIGNED TO) !!

"You never laugh on the way to the bank."

"I deposit checks via the bank's app now. I only go to the bank to use the cash machine to get my own money out. So there's no humor there."

I say F ‘em. The likelihood that you’ll produce something new with them that catches any momentum is low, despite your recent good fortune. Life is too short to deal with numb nuts.

All true, except that the chances of producing something new that catches momentum without the name is even lower.

My opinion is this.

I'd write with those guys but I'd go about it differently. If you guys "click" that's a good thing but that doesn't always happen so you may have the perfect formula for turning out great material. Capitalize on that.

Hammer out how credits are set for the new material and send each other the material via email so you don't have to spend time in the same room.

If the material you and those fellas create is that good then it deserves to be heard plus the revenue is a bonus.

Maybe exchanging ideas via email is enough of an insulator to make it tolerable. I would value the fact that the material is out there doing something good more than the monetary value it creates.

In the end.....if you can't stand working with them then pull the plug and walk away.

Good luck.

These days you don't have to be in the same room. Can you collaborate via sharing mixes / write lyrics over email? I assume since there is no intent to "tour" again, just accept it for what it is. Opportunity knocks...plus by doing it this way the emails etc serve as record of who did what.

Why miss out on something that is really cool.

László knows by volumes of what he speaks. He's giving you sound advise on how to not squander any of the equity you've built with past success. While it's no longer a chummy band situation, you can still have a path to leverage the past success and make some more money with a known band brand. Get it while you can. Say yes, cash checks. Good Hunting. PS, apologies for all the bold face type, the site just did that and I tried to turn it off to no avail.
