One of my local shops had a PRS event over the weekend. A guy from the factory was there. I'm sorry but I forgot his name. He was a cool dude and we talked for a good while about all kinds of PRS gear and PRSh stuff. I got to play, and hear, some things I hadn't before so I thought I'd share a few thoughts.

The DG15- Didn't play it but some guy there did for probably 45 minutes. While he didn't mess with the knobs a lot so I can't speak on the range, the tone was VERY good through it's stock 1x cab. They had rigged a small pedal board with all three PRS pedals on it. He played through the comp, which I have and love, some. Then he played through the Wind for a good while. That thing sounded great and while he didn't move the knobs as much as I would have, the range of sounds it showed was all great. He never turned on the Horse, which is unfortunate but I'm going to get one anyway.

They DID NOT have the new Sonzera, much to my chagrin. The guy from the factory said they are sold out and probably 30 days or more before my store gets one. He said the response has been overwhelmingly positive to them, and they sold out quickly and weren't ready for it.

They had an HDRX20 and I already have that, but I did talk to him about it. He LOVES the HDRX amps and said that they are getting a lot of feedback that the 20 sounds like a 2K amp and the only complaint is that it's as loud as a 50 watter. (I can vouch for the last part!).

I picked up and briefly played two NF53's. I didn't plug either in but holy crap these things played like butter! No tele ever played like that! Loved the necks, both were ALIVE with vibration and bends were easy. NEVER considered one and don't like Tele bodies, but this is a GREAT guitar!

I played one of the new SE NF guitars and boy... for the money, that thing was VERY NICE! Like surprisingly good for well under $1k! One guy played one through the DG 15 and boy did it sound great. I think he came in to check out the amp and left loving the guitar as well.

I played an SE Silver Sky. It was very nice as well. I liked the radius much better than my US version. Still round, but not as round.

I played various other guitars... S2 594SC with core electronics that I thought would be an "I might need this" guitar, but it didn't blow me away. It was nice, and I'd definitely consider it, just didn't blow me away. Several others that were really nice, but too close to what I have.

The stars of the show, IMO, were the DG15 and the SE NF3. Even without spending time dialing the DG15 to see what all it could do, the tones it was putting out were GREAT! I've heard two recent clips of the new Sonzera though, that sounded fantastic. I really wanted to try one of those.

I'll say that my HDRX 20 sounds very good with various pedals, but I still haven't really given it much of a workout with single coils, which is supposed to be it's forte'. The appeal of the new Sonzera vs. it, is that it's two channels and a combo. I am considering a combo to replace my modeler/monitor setup I use when I play out, so the Sonzera really has me interested.

There are a few other things I played or heard while there. Might add more later if I think of anything in particular

I remembered that the PRS employees name was on the invitation. It was Mike Robb. He was a good guy and I enjoyed talking to him. One thing I thought I’d share because it was funny. We were in general discussion about multiple PRS gear items, and he asked a question about amps, and specifically, the HX/DA vs. the HDRX. He was telling about how Paul and Doug got to go over the Hendrix touring amp part by part, etc. I was going to ask a question about something that came up here, and figured I’d just ask him of he had seen it first. I said “do you ever go to the PRS forum?” He laughed and said “no, I try to stay out of there.” I laughed when he said it, but he started to say something and got interrupted by a question from someone else.

Excellent!!!

I've found much of the same with the gear you heard and tried that day.

The new Sonzera is really good, I'm not sure why they didn't make a bigger deal about it. I found the old one to be very harsh, but the new one is spot on. Excellent black panel tone on the clean side, and a drive that compliments it very well.

Did you see the short clip Paul put up recently about the Sonzera? one was talking about "Paul's new favorite amp" and another had to do with him playing with Orianthi. Both were very short clips of him playing the new Sonzera and it sounded GREAT!

I saw the clip of him talking about the amp! Will have to look for the other one.

Other things I forgot to mention:

I went to check out some new things, but one thing I was hoping is that they would have at least one Santana so I could finally try one. They didn't!

Second, they have two SE DGT guitars, including a gold top. I forgot to mention those. I played both and they were really nice!

Maybe you talked with Matt Hallam? He’s regional sales manager and a super nice guy. Not sure what states he all covers. That DGT amp has my interest. I’d also like to revisit the NF53/MK guitars. I didn’t plug either in because if memory serves, I like the Myles neck finish but the NF53 carve? I don’t remember now. Probably won’t get lucky enough to find both in stock anywhere.

Paul was at Washington Music Center in early November for a chat and Q&A, unfortunately the date was not set up for much gear testing. But he played exclusively through the Sonzera and remarked multiple times how good he thought it was, and was surprised more people didn't get one.
