Something that has been helping me get through is judicious application of the "ignore member" option! Everything remains civil in my world.

Irregardless of how much we debate things there are some on either side of an issue who will walk away unconvinced that their opinion may have some flaws. Sometimes it isn't even a matter of an opinion as much as someone's personal delight in winding others up.

In this time of stress I suggest simply using the button, which will then allow this forum to remain the friendly place that it has been for so long. Click on the person's name and you will see their info. On the right side you can click "ignore".

N'est ce pas?

I will be forever grateful to Sergio for convincing me to use the ignore option. I always thought if I had to resort to that, it was a sign of weakness. But he said, "Dude, no - you're taking control of the situation and blocking the negative that you'll never win over." He was right. It's made life online so much better. And I believe I've only ever used it on a handful of people on this site, but it's a charm.

I've argued for it on a sports subscription site I belong to. They're coming out w/a new web site and app soon, and I pushed hard for an ignore button. I was truly surprised how many people didn't want it and viewed it as censorship or 'snowflake'-iness. The site ultimately decided to go with a report button instead. I tried to point out that 'ignore' is just self-moderation - you remove the negative people from your experience while letting them rant on. I lost.

I can't fathom how someone would consider it censorship since others are allowed to post what they wish and others are free to read it. Sounds like an irrational argument.

You know you can just ignore anything you want without relying on something to do it for you. It’s called self control :)

Oh gods, it's glorious! Thanks!

I just hope they aren't convincing others with their dangerous, ignorant, and selfish rhetoric.

So happy you un-ignored me!

I think it was a combination of ignorance and what Herr Squid said. Some people seemed to think if I pressed ignore on you, no one could read your comments. Other people seemed more inclined that if they post a comment, everyone should see it and you can just scroll past posts by that person. But when person A makes a comment and 20 people pile on and attack that person, now I'm not scrolling past a comment, I'm scrolling past 30 or 40 to get to the next thing. And quite frankly, most of the time it's those other 20 I don't want to hear from. (And I know this sounds a lot like that other thread, but it's really not - I thought it was a good discussion to a point, even when we were disagreeing. This would be more like if every time you posted a comment, 20 people attacked you because you had a point of view they didn't like. Even if it wasn't about that particular point.)
