I think he's more talking about the fact the switch route doesn't seem to be all the way around like the second image.There's probably enough slack that the switch could be loosened, re-centered, and tightened back down.

I can only think the upper bout had a bit of really exuberant sanding to get something undesirable out of the wood, or perhaps the switch route programming went through a few iterations and that's an early one.

There’s nothing wrong with that toggle or the inclusion in the shell inlay.
There isn’t a gap. It’s beveled. The bevel around the switch is supposed to be there. It’s there because the upper bout is carved, not flat, so the switch has to be set into a bevel to fit properly.
One of my 594s was used in PRS’ photo shoot for their product website; there’s no way they’d use a less-than-perfect specimen for that purpose. It has the bevel, and so does my other one.
