Archon 50 MKII - To buy, or not to buy??

It did a search, and there was some that touched on some questions I have, but alot chimed in owning the pre-MKI, which doesn't really help.

Firstly, it seems many find the effects loop primarily fixed in the MKII, with only a small handful that I've found online beyond this forum. Those that have complained said a lower gain tube in the FX Loop slot fixes it, (if they have any issues at all).

I'm a tinkerer - I prefer EL34's, and was never really a fan of the JJ 6CA7's. Has anybody had an issues getting EL34's to bias up? Some amps don't have enough sweep, and if you don't get a hotter pair within range, they're tough to bias up. Plenty of sweep in the pots? My tube of choice is the KT77's.. I assume, since it's an EL34 derivative, it should be fine to use?

Great Master for lower volume when needed? I play at home alot at lower volumes, but I do get to crank it too.

How are the LEAD tones? Is it harmonically rich? All demos are just rhythm noodling - can't really hear and lead capabilities..

Lastly, what I haven't really found in my searches, is QC, and reliability. Any known issues? Any build quality problems? Are they pretty solid?
I found a deal under $999 brand new, but if there's any issues, I'd just pass, spend more, and get into used USA territory, (but I can't find any used Archons without loop problems, or crazy prices close to what they were new). I honestly would go with a different brand if I were spending much more.

I bought one, we'll see. First thing is, I'll check the plate voltage. 25-30mV seems awful cold! Then I'll get all those JJ's out of the preamp and try some Tungsol, Mullard, Gold Lions, and a Sovtek LPS in the PI. I also have some NOS GE JAN 5751's if the gain is crazy. Plus, if there is a loop issue, they'll work in that slot. I also have an ISP Decimator that'll clean up any noise in the loop. I really like it's unique voicing. I'm willing to bet a warmer bias and tube upgrades will be even better!

This is a great amp! It is dark, but a Tungsol in V1 really brings some sizzle and brightens it up nicely!

I checked the plate voltage, it was biased at 24mA from the factory at 440 plate voltage! That's crazy cold. I put in JJ KT77's and biased it closer to 60%, (34mA), HUGE difference! More warmth and punchier.

It did have some slight FX loop hum, which was quickly fixed by an ECC82 in the FX loop slot. Super quiet now. I also put a Sovtek LPS in the PI slot.

I'm amazed how great the amp sounds, especially considering what I paid for it. It'll give much more expensive amps a run for their money! Great sounding amp, and one of the best Master Volumes I've ever had. Easily does lower volumes, and also has a great taper and gets loud past 9 o'clock. The build quality is superb as well.
