Got home last night and decided to throw some el34s into the Archon 50. VERY pleased with the results.
Kept the bias at around what the stock 6ca7s were. Nothing major there. But it really gets this amp singing man! I really loved the 6l6s in the MT15, but the el34s in the Archon are just amazing.

Interesting!

I've always felt that EL34s had a bit more midrange detail and a sound all their own, and 6CA7s were more girthy, also with a unique sound. 'Singing' is very appropriate to describe that EL34 tone. Of course, a lot depends on the tube itself. Each brand sounds a little different.

The guitar is mostly a midrange instrument. Not surprising that someone might prefer the EL34 sound, or vice-versa.

Got home tonight and played for two hours. Full shred up and about the neck. I am really digging the sound, although our house power causes my amp to sometimes slightly thin out for a second. Only happens when the daughter is attempting to run every appliance in the place. Sigh.

Is this the new Archon, or the made in the US one?

The gain sweep on the new ones is apparently much more gradual. How do the lower gain sounds hold up for blues / mild crunch? Better with EL34's?

I have actually considered trying kt66 tubes in this archon. The service center at PRS believes it would work, but said they hadn’t tried them. Also, could I run 6l6gc tubes in this amp?
