Archon 100 power tube options

Hi everyone,

Was looking around on the forums and ran across some posts from others here who stated the Archon can use KT66 tubes and of course a bias would need to be performed afterwards.

Before spending $$$ on some Gold Lion KT66 power tubes I wanted to get everyone’s thoughts. I emailed PRS who said only 6L6 tubes could be used but then from posts online I’ve read others who contacted PRS who told them that yes KT66 tubes can be used -and- not to be confused with KT77 tubes.

I had Shuguang KT66s in my Archon 50 for ~9 months, and I just recently swapped them for JJ E34Ls. The KT66s put out noticeably more low bass than 6L6s or EL34s do in the Archon, which can get a tad muddy with 7-string or lower-tuned guitars given how much bass the Archon has to start with.

I mostly play in standard, half and drop d tunings.

I emailed PRS prior to posting here which the reply I got was that KT66 tubes could not be used but maybe the person replying wasn’t aware KT66 tubes could be used.

Hi Lyric,

KT66's have double the plate impedance and would have a mismatch output impedance. The recommended bias for the Archon would be 30mV.

Maybe it’s best to stick with 6L6 tubes lol.

Seriously, you can’t come in here running your mouth like you did, and not expect people to have some fun with it. What YOU did was completely lame, and immature. Rather than tell you to STFU and go away, we tried to have a little fun with your posts. This isn’t The Gear Page, maroon. There aren’t 200,000 people on here every day. Asking a tube swapping question about one specific amp model may not get replies for a few days. If you can’t handle that, you don’t belong here anyway. If you want to through a little pissy fit because nobody answered you quickly enough, then you need to be in a big forum where the needy get the attention they require. Lots of people have Archons here, but like I found when I asked about swapping power tubes two years ago, and every thread about it since, not many people have done it. A few have, most haven’t. Like it or don’t. I don’t really care.

Sad thing for you is, there are several Archon owners who have swapped power tubes, and if you’d just waited for a couple of them to reply, you would have gotten what you asked for. Instead, you flip out when someone doesn’t reply... when you’ve specifically asked about a tube PRS has told you NOT to use. Were you hoping someone would chim in and say it was OK?

Of course, if you apologized for your lame post above and the other thread, I’d forget it and welcome you back like it never happened, but you seem more interested in calling names than apologizing, so I’m not holding much hope.

I understand and I had found several threads where members swapped power tubes. Yes I contacted PRS who said no and they did not recommend anything other than 6L6 or EL34. But reading through the forum I found threads with members who stated when they contacted PRS they were told by PRS that KT66 tubes could be used but when I contacted them I was told no and that it’s not recommended.

- Anyways it’s happened, it’s screwed up. No need for replies, just saying what I should say for my mistakes. I apologize and thank you

Doing some quick math here....

DTR = 70 x 7
Les = 1 x 1

I'm not sure what that means, as I don't know how this new math works.
